Job Responsibilities
- This employee will be responsible for assisting the hatchery manager with all pond harvest activities at Bayless Hatchery and Dennis Wildlife Center (DWC).
Job Duties Include:- Assisting with fish culture activities at Bayless Hatchery and DWC.
- This includes all culture aspects pertaining to broodstock collection, spawning, pond stocking, fertilization, feeding, water quality monitoring, harvesting, and distribution.
- Species to include striped bass, bluegill, redbreast, robust redhorse, channel catfish, tilapia, and American shad.
- Notifying supervisor and taking corrective measures in the event of a power outage, dissolved oxygen problems, or disease issues.
- Supervising daily striped bass hatchery operations, including broodstock management, larval culture, Artemia production, and seasonal staff.
- Ensuring broodfish genetic records are maintained, preserving and coordinating fish tissue DNA samples for analysis, collecting and recording production data during spawning, fertilization, fry distribution, and pond harvests, ensuring accurate hatchery production and genetic management.
- Ensuring Bayless Hatchery and DWC grounds, culture rearing systems, ponds, tanks and raceways are neatly maintained and functioning correctly.
- Assisting with pond filling, draining, fertilization and aquatic weed treatments in rearing ponds for phase I striped bass production.
- Coordinating with hatchery manager to fulfill duties when staff are absent.
- Managing seasonal staff at DWC.
- Assisting other state and federal hatcheries with harvest and distribution of fish.
- Assisting with fish culture activities at Bayless Hatchery and DWC.
