Job Responsibilities

This employee will serve as a field technician for Canal WMA, Sandy Beach, Francis Marion and Moultrie Hunt Unit.

Job Duties Include:
  • Assisting with and conducting the planting, cultivation and manipulation of the dove fields on the Canal WMA.
  • Assisting with the planting of the Sandy Beach Waterfowl Area and other aspects associated with the management of the waterfowl area.
  • Conducting water level management as needed.
  • Planting and maintaining wildlife openings on Sandy Beach, Bluefield, North Dike, Halls & Cross Generating Station for youth deer hunts.
    • Assisting with deer stand set up and take down.
    • Assisting with and conducting youth deer hunts.
  • Maintaining agricultural equipment and tractors on a regular basis. Including, conducting preventative maintenance routinely.
  • Assisting with and conducting the collection of field data and conducting wildlife surveys in a professional manner.
    • This includes but is not limited to: furbearer routes, quail call routes, dove/duck trapping and banding, deer spotlight surveys, dove wing collection and aging, collection of deer and turkey data cards, biological collection of deer data including age, weight and other samples, wood duck box data collection and maintenance, and accurately answering hunter questions during public hunts.
  • Planning and executing the planting, fertilizing and maintenance of wildlife openings on the Hellhole and Santee WMA's of the Francis Marion Forest.
  • Ensuring supervisor receives notification at least two (2) months in advance of seed and fertilizer needs
  • Assisting other areas (Bonneau Ferry, Childsbury, etc) within the Unit with wildlife management and habitat management activities.

Minimum and Additional Requirements

A high school diploma and two (2) years of experience in wildlife, fisheries or agricultural work or an associate degree in the technical sciences.

Ability to obtain a CDL, pesticide applicators license, and prescribed fire certification.

Preferred Qualifications

Ability to lift heavy objects and complete strenuous tasks. Ability to operate a tractor, implements, and other equipment. Ability to work with limited supervision and as part of a team. Ability to conduct public hunts and represent DNR in public. Ability to work in harsh environments and at odd hours, weekends and some holidays. Knowledge of wildlife and habitat management. Ability to operate heavy equipment. Ability to obtain CDL and pesticide applicators license.
