Job Description
Job Summary
Maintain a high level of reliability for all SCPA non-containerized cargo handling equipment to include but not limited to vehicles, lift trucks, mobile elevated work platforms, and gasoline / diesel / LP engine powered miscellaneous equipment.
Essential Job Responsibilities
- Complete the Material Handling Mechanic On-the-Job Training Program.
- Under instruction, perform proper and timely corrective and preventive maintenance on SCPA non-containerized cargo handling equipment.
- Learn the practices of the trade under the supervision of qualified craftsmen.
- Assist with the installation, testing, and acceptance of new equipment.
- Under instruction, perform assigned tasks in compliance with applicable safety, hazardous material, and environmental policies, rules, and regulations.
- Use the computerized maintenance program to document all work activities performed in a timely and accurate manner.
- Complete all payroll-related records in a timely and proper manner.
- Observe all SCPA safety practices and procedures.
- Maintain housekeeping to high standards both during and at the completion of all tasks.
- Perform other duties as assigned by appropriate supervisory personnel.

Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications
Education and Experience
- At least 18 years of age.
- High School Diploma or equivalent.
- Completion of Trident Technical College’s Automotive Servicing Certificate Program or completion of an appropriate college level Automotive or Industrial Maintenance Certificate Program.
- No automotive or industrial experience is required but preferred.
- A valid South Carolina driver’s license is required to operate a Ports Authority owned licensed motor vehicle.
Skills and Abilities
- Interpersonal skills for liaison with coworkers and internal customers.
- Good written and verbal communication skills.
- Basic reading and writing skills in the English language.
- Technical reading and writing skills in the English language.
- Basic computer skills.
- Must be willing to work flexible schedules that may be more than eight (8) hours per day and include early mornings, evenings, nights, holidays, and weekends.
- Must be reachable when not at work (e.g., have a telephone in the home, have a cell phone).
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions
- Ability to stand and / or sit for a minimum of 8 hours per day.
- Ability to climb stairs and ladders up to 15 ft. tall numerous times per day.
- Ability to walk, bend, stoop, kneel, push and pull for a minimum of eight (8) hours per day.
- Ability to lift and / or carry items of not more than 50 pounds for a minimum of eight (8) hours per day.
- Ability to lift items overhead several times per day.
- Ability to work comfortably at heights greater than 100 feet.
- Vision is required to analyze and process various forms and documents utilized within the framework of performing assigned tasks. Must not be color blind.
- Hearing is required to adequately perform verbal, telecommunication, and radio communications and to recognize audible alarms and warning devices.
- Ability to verbally communicate clearly with vendors, customers, co-workers, etc.
- Ability to operate a computer keyboard and view a computer monitor screen.
- Must be capable of wearing required personal protective equipment (e.g., safety glasses, safety shoes, hard hat, reflective vests, hearing protection, fall protection).
- Must be capable of working in small (i.e., confining) spaces.
- Must be capable of using small hand tools (e.g., screwdrivers, wrenches) and power tools (e.g., drills, impact wrenches).
