Work Locations: 16-17 weeks of in-class training located at the Palmetto Commerce Parkway Ladson Office Building. After the in-class training, this position requires 5 weeks of clinicals at a RSFH location which will be assigned.
Important Information: Selected teammates are required to sign an agreement adhering to the terms and conditions of the program including: Time & Attendance, Professional Standards of Appearance, Mobile Device Usage, HIPAA Privacy and Security Sanctions, Living Our Culture at RSFH, Obtaining MA Certification within 120-days of program completion, and other important program details.
Summary of Primary Function/General Purpose of Position:
Roper St. Francis Physician Partners will provide a paid role to complete training and examination costs to those who participate in the Roper St. Francis Physician Partners (RSFPP) Medical Assistant Program. The training and testing period will last no more than one year after employment in the Medical Assistant Student role starts. Once the CCMA certification is obtained, the employed participant must commit to working for RSFPP for 24 months in the role of Certified Medical Assistant. All standard tuition and transfer policy and practices apply. Please note that this is not a contract of employment, as you are considered an “employee at will.”
During clinical rotation - Provide patient care in outpatient physician practice under the direction of the practicing MD, APP or RN. Responsible for staging patients in preparation to see providers. Update all patient medications in the medication history at each visit. Perform patient related tasks as directed by practice providers. Facilitate the timely communication of clinical advice to patients electronically or by phone as directed by practice providers. Ensure all needed medical records are available to care teams and providers prior to patient’s office visit. Coordinate with other team members to provide exceptional patient service. Assist with other clinical and clerical duties to ensure optimization of patient experience within the practice. The Medical Assistant should be proficient with Electronic Health Record, Epic.
Essential Job Functions
- Actively engaged & participates in class
- Identifies significant changes in patient condition through data collection and reports them to the provider.
- Troubleshoots issues and escalate problems to provider, direct supervisor, or appropriate internal resource.
- Demonstrates standards of excellence in care in all interactions, for both internal and external customers.
- Maintains clinical and administrative skills per the departmental competency guidelines to meet patient care and daily operational needs.
- Usher patients to examination rooms and prepares them for the physician.
- Travels to other facilities for RSFH providers or adjusts hours to meet patient care needs as directed by the practice manager as needed.
- Maintains a safe and supportive environment by keeping the work area, exam rooms, and equipment in clean, orderly, and safe manner, ensuring availability and proper functioning of supplies and equipment.
- Documents in electronic medical records (EMR) accurately and appropriately.
- Provide patient care in the outpatient physician practice as one of the Medical Assisting team during clinical rotation
- Assist with other clinical and clerical duties to ensure optimization of patient experience within the practice
- Understands and adheres to the legal responsibilities and requirements within the Medical Assistant Apprentice role.

Licensing/Certification:
- Must complete the American Heart Association BLS for Healthcare Provider certification within six months, if not current upon hire.
Teammates newly hired into this position will have 12 months from the date of hire to complete their CMA certification from a certifying board approved by the Board of Medical Examiners after completion of the program; they will then transition into the Certified Medical Assistant job title.
Education:
- High School/GED (required)
Work Experience:
- One-year of experience in a heath care setting is preferred.
Knowledge/Skills:
- Strong patient-centered focus. Effective verbal and written communication skills. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with patients, employees, and the public. Ability to organize and manage competing priorities. Ability to problem solve and show good judgment. Record vital signs on all patients at every visit according to practice protocols. Basic skill with computer keyboard, data entry functions and various software programs, e.g, Word, and Internet applications. Proficient in basic math, computer, and English skills. Exhibits positive customer service skills
