Job Summary: Performs accessioning, specimen processing, clerical and customer service duties in the laboratory while participating in an educational program in Medical Laboratory Science. May perform waived and moderate complexity testing and assist with phlebotomy procedures.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education: Currently enrolled in an accredited Health Science program (Medical Laboratory Science) leading to an Associate's or bachelor’s degree (required).

Experience: None required.

Licensure/Certification: None required.

Knowledge/Skills: Knowledge of medical terminology and standard office equipment-computers, phones. Must be able to work efficiently under stressful conditions and time constraints. Requires the ability to communicate clearly.

Other: Must maintain strict confidentiality of work-related information.

Contacts: Requires the ability to work well with laboratory and hospital staff, patients, and physician offices.

Work Demands/Environment:

Frequent standing, walking, sitting, bending, stooping. May require lifting or moving items up to 25 lbs. Frequent use of finger/hand dexterity and eye/hand coordination. Frequent reaching with hands/arms. Corrected hearing and vision to normal range. Requires visual acuity and normal color perception needed for interpretation of lab orders and proper collection technique. Exposure to blood, body fluids or tissue. Frequent exposure to infectious materials, communicable diseases and/or other conditions common to a laboratory environment. Normal laboratory environment. Ability to read and comprehend. Fast paced, high traffic work environment which may be interruptive and stressful. May be required to work weekends/holidays based on the needs of the department.

JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES % OF TIME

1. Technical Skills: Responsible for specimen accessioning and processing of blood and non-blood specimens prior to testing in the Clinical laboratory. Verifies patient ID and specimen source of all specimens. Understands laboratory policy for specimen acceptance and rejection criteria. Assists with general lab duties including supply distribution and specimen storage. Understands basic operation, maintenance and troubleshooting procedures for laboratory processing equipment. May perform waived and moderate complexity testing. Assists with phlebotomy as required.

2. Information/Customer Service: Responsible for use of laboratory information system to register, order, receive and cancel tests. Responsible for specimen problem resolution by requesting specimen recollection. Performs proper documentation for problem resolution via the laboratory information system and hospital incident reporting system. Responsible for disposition of lab results by calling or faxing lab reports

3. Communication: Communicates information to supervisor co-workers or students, laboratory staff on other shifts, outside departments – accurately, timely, clearly, and professionally concerning specimen handling and delivery, scheduling or problems. Responds to requests for results in an appropriate and timely manner. Fills physician office requests for forms and supplies.

4. Compliance/Safety/Quality/Education: Participates in learning opportunities during work hours in all laboratory areas. Is aware of and follows laboratory and hospital policies/procedures. Informs supervisor of issues or problems involving laboratory or hospital safety. Maintains a safe work environment. Completes all mandatory education and participates in available continuing education programs. Works to meet department Quality Improvement Goals.
