Primary Function/General Purpose of Position

The nursing retention specialist is responsible for developing, implementing, and sustaining retention programs and system wide initiatives aimed at retaining nursing and patient care talent. In collaboration with nursing leadership, this role will lead initiatives to further the engagement of our nursing care team. This role is also be responsible for facilitating collaborative working relationships with partners across the system who each have a role in organizational engagement, retention strategy and program administration (Professional Development, Talent Acquisition, Human Resources, Marketing, etc.).

Essential Job Functions

Leadership through Collaboration

  • Collaborates with nursing leadership and hiring leaders to implement workforce strategies which include internal and external benchmarking to further identify drivers around retention strategies

  • Participates in system committees, Shared Governance, operations meetings, and other opportunities to promote team and departmental initiatives

  • Actively participates in task forces, committees, and represents senior leadership or any of their areas of responsibility on multidisciplinary teams

  • Supports school of nursing programs/affiliations and conducts onsite and/or virtual visits

  • Engages in recruitment initiatives in partnership with nursing leadership and Talent Acquisition

Engagement and Relationships

  • Develops and implements strategic initiatives, programs, and processes for engaging and retaining nursing and patient care talent

  • Fosters relationships and communications with nursing and patient care talent to enable problem identification and resolution, career counseling, alternative solutions to voluntary termination

  • Works closely with system Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion team to develop strategies that attract and support a diverse workforce

  • Designs and deploys internal recognition and communication campaigns

  • Champions Well-Being initiatives for nursing across the organization

  • Design and lead formal nursing mentorship

  • Facilitates Clinical Ladder team and Professional Engagement and Advancement Council

Data Collection, Analysis and Reporting

  • Conducts stay interviews as indicated by engagement, turnover, and exit data to develop action plans.

  • Establishes and maintains robust reporting models to track retention and engagement metrics as well as identifying and addressing specific trends

  • Collaborates with system and nursing leadership to review retention data, develop targeted action plans for identified practice settings, leaders, and patient care talent

Licensing/Certification

Must be currently licensed as a Registered Nurse in the state of South Carolina or holds a current compact/multi-state license as a Registered Nurse in a recognized NCSBN Compact State and is not a permanent resident of SC. Nursing Specialty Certification required within six months of hire (applicable certifications include approved ANCC, Clinical Specialty or Nursing Leadership certifications).

Education

Graduate of an accredited school of nursing required. Master’s degree required in nursing or related field such as Healthcare Administration or Business Administration (must hold a BSN if master’s degree in a non-nursing field).

Work Experience

Five years’ experience required. Nursing leadership, project management, professional development, experience with retention and recruitment preferred.
