Aerospace Mechanical Assembler
Elmec is looking for a skilled aero-structure assembler to join our team in the growing Charleston aviation industry. The ideal candidate will have experience in assembling aero-structure detailed parts, systems to sub/full assemblies, ensuring high-quality standards and strict adherence to safety protocols.
Core Responsibilities:
- Perform manual production assembly of structural and mechanical components, sub-assemblies, and accessories.
- Verify kitted parts against installation plans and bill of materials for accuracy and readiness.
- Select and operate appropriate drill bits and tools to meet engineering specifications.
- Apply sealants, primers, and adhesives per work instructions and process standards.
- Install fasteners in correct sequence using torque tools and pneumatic equipment.
- Inspect completed assemblies for defects, ensuring compliance with engineering drawings; report any job handicaps or discrepancies.
- Move kits, carts, and equipment within the work cell to support efficient workflow.
- Maintain personal certifications and tool calibration requirements.
- Support continuous improvement by participating in design, fabrication, and testing of new technologies and processes.
Required Skills & Qualifications:
- At least 1+ year of experience in manufacturing, automotive, construction, aerospace, or a related industry; military experience also considered
- At least 1+ year of experience interpreting blueprints, technical drawings, and written work instructions
- Proficient in using hand tools and handheld power tools for a minimum of 1 year
- Familiarity with Microsoft Office applications, including Excel, Word, and PowerPoint
- Ability to accurately distinguish colors
- Capable of wearing required personal protective equipment, including hearing and eye protection
- Comfortable working with hazardous materials such as sealants, paints, carbon composites and primers
- High school diploma or equivalent required
Preferred Qualifications (Desired Skills/Experience):
- Over 3+ years of experience installing or repairing aerospace carbon composite components or automotive systems using precision measurement instruments, hand tools, and power tools
- Possession of a Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Airframe and Powerplant (A&P) Certificate, or equivalent training from a Military Technical School
- Familiarity with shop floor practices, including Foreign Object Damage/Debris (FOD) prevention, material handling, safety protocols, calibration standards, and Electrostatic Discharge (ESD) procedures
- Understanding of the differences between production (manufacturing) processes and in-service maintenance or operational requirements
- Strong commitment to the mission, with a demonstrated ability to harness team energy and expertise toward shared goals
- Proven understanding of effective team dynamics and collaboration to drive high performance
