Job Description Summary

This position leads, develops and delivers the communications and marketing strategy for the college, directing the communications and marketing program design and execution. Develops greater awareness of and engagement in the college’s mission, programs and services among current and prospective audiences, including patients, students, employees, dental associations, alumni, donors, and other stakeholders. Responsible for establishing annual objectives for the communications and marketing function, effectively leveraging strategic channels to meet objectives, analyzing outcomes, managing projects, creating content, and leading the communications and marketing team. This position works independently on projects prioritized by the Assistant Dean of Finance and Admin and the Dean of the college, works collaboratively with colleagues throughout the college to identify needs and drive change across a growing organization, and supervises the Communications Coordinator. This position is able to balance needs of stakeholders and proactively build relationships with partners across the enterprise (communications, marketing, public affairs, brand, development, web and clinical office teams).

Job Description

25%: Strategic planning, team member supervision, and fiscal responsibility.

  • The Communications & Marketing Director leads the strategic communication and marketing efforts of the college through the creation and execution of the college’s overall communications and marketing plan.

  • Responsible for developing the college’s communications and marketing and increasing the reach and awareness of the college along with the clinical services it provides.

  • Responsible for delivering annual plan, reporting and delivering on results, and developing the annual communications and marketing budget.

  • Individually and in coordination with central marketing, develop long-term Key Performance Indicators (KPI) to confirm the return on investment of marketing spend.

25%: Clinical marketing

  • Responsible for the end-to-end campaign planning/execution/tracking for strategic marketing initiatives, including

    • Patient marketing and supporting the clinical goal for annual increase in revenue

    • College objectives for student, resident and employee recruitment.

  • Advance dental clinic marketing growth initiatives through collaboration with college leadership, continued learning of digital marketing tools and tactics, and proactive integration with partners throughout the enterprise.

15%: Internal Communications

  • Oversees the performance and optimization of internal communications channels.

  • Craft messaging for leadership.

  • Develop content calendar.

  • Other internal communications duties as assigned.

15%: Web communications

  • Serves as CDM website content manager across four MUSC web domains.

  • Sets goals and tracks effectiveness through metrics and data for academic and clinical communications and marketing, leveraging web presence to meet strategic objectives, and advising college leadership on improving patient acquisition and retention.

  • Optimizes website for search engines (SEO).

10%: Media/Public/Alumni Relations

  • Develops and executes on the college’s communications strategy, supported by annual objectives and an earned media plan.

  • Supervises Communications and Marketing coordinator.

  • Review and continually evaluate communication tools to ensure we have the most effective tools for the college, including social media and graphic design.

  • Improve efficiency of communications processes.

  • Develop and maintain measures of success for internal and external communication strategies.

  • Responsible for planning, execution and tracking of communications tactics to include but not limited to:

    • Position CDM and MUSC as a national leader in dental and oral health research and innovation,

    • Inform CDM faculty, staff, residents and students, and inspire a culture of collaboration, integration and interprofessional in our talented workforce

    • Maintain presence with alumni, top scholarship funders and supports Office of Development dental communications.

  • Serves as liaison to MUSC Communications and Marketing.

  • Serves as college’s brand ambassador, ensuring adherence to brand standards.

  • Responsible for the development and printing of annual alumni magazine with college updates.

5%: Social media

  • Manages the college’s social media strategy and content calendar.

  • Continually evaluate channel performance to ensure we’re leveraging the right distribution tools.

  • Manage and monitor campaign outcomes - paid advertising and organic content - to drive student and resident recruitment and new patient acquisition.

  • Serves on enterprise Social Media Governance Council. (With new team member, I’m not the main content creator anymore)

5%: Other duties as assigned.
