Charleston, SC | Transfusion Medicine PathologistJoin a team that’s Changing What’s Possible – The Medical University of South Carolina’s (MUSC) nationally recognized Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine seeks an academically-oriented board-certified Transfusion Medicine Physician. MUSC, Charleston Division, is the quaternary medical center for South Carolina and provides a comprehensive transplant program, NCI-designated Hollings Cancer Center, Shawn Jenkins Children’s Hospital / Pearl Tourville Women’s Pavilion, Ashley River Tower, and Main Hospital. A contiguous dedicated Cancer Hospital is planned for construction within the next five years. The pathology department provides comprehensive services across the Division. Our department has approximately $5 million dollars in extramural funding annually and is consistently ranked in the upper half of pathology departments in the United States for National Institutes of Health funding. The hospital supports a large solid organ transplant program including liver, kidney, heart, and lung transplants as well as adult and pediatric stem cell transplant program. In addition, there are two Level 1 trauma centers. In supporting these services and the additional transfusion needs of MUSC, the transfusion service currently provides more than 50,000 blood products. In addition, the transfusion service physician also acts as the director of the cell therapy processing laboratory which supports approximately 260 stem cell transplants and CAR-T procedures annually. FACT requires that the processing laboratory director have at least 2 years of experience and/or training to qualify as the director of a stem cell processing laboratory.

Job Description
We are seeking
An academically oriented candidate with 2-8 years of post-fellowship experience in Transfusion Medicine including at least 2 years training / experience in cell therapy (stem cell) processing laboratory; current fellow/recent graduates will be considered
MD or equivalent degree with relevant pathology specialty training and certification by the American Board of Pathology in Anatomic, Clinical, and Transfusion Medicine. Clinical Pathology/Transfusion candidates will be considered.
Eligibility for medical licensure in South Carolina
Proficiency in the interpretation of results for those techniques employed in the clinical work-up of cases for transfusion services and complications
Performance and optimization of quality control procedures to ensure accuracy and reliability of test results
Knowledge and experience in transfusion medicine accreditation maintenance, test development, validation, and implementation
Experience in fostering collaborative relationships with clinicians and researchers as well as serving as a resource to technologists at the bench
Participation in clinical and/or translational research endeavors
Excellent communication skills, work ethic, and collaborative approach to patient care
Active participation in teaching of medical students and training of pathology residents and fellows
Active participation in the ACGME-accredited molecular genetic pathology fellowship training program ongoing development and training
Active participation in the academic mission of the Department

The Department offers an ACGME-accredited fellowship programs in Cytopathology, Neuropathology, Hematopathology, Dermatopathology, and Molecular Genetic Pathology with advanced training programs available for Surgical Pathology, Gastrointestinal Pathology, and Clinical Chemistry.
