Job Description Summary
The Business & Finance Director II provides strategic financial leadership and operational oversight in support of the Cancer Integrated Center of Clinical Excellence (ICCE) at MUSC Health. This position supports a clinical and academic portfolio with Total Operating Revenue exceeding $1.73B. Operating under limited supervision, the Business & Finance Director II is responsible for financial stewardship, long-range planning, and enterprise alignment for cancer services across MUSC Health’s statewide footprint.Reporting directly to the System Administrative Officer of the Cancer ICCE, this role works closely with the Cancer ICCE Chief, Cancer ICCE leadership and the Director of Corporate Finance, the Associate Chief Financial Officer, and the financial leadership teams across the divisions. This leader delivers high-quality, integrated financial services and collaborates in the execution of strategic initiatives, business planning, budgeting, and performance measurement to advance the mission and operational excellence of the Cancer ICCE.

The role of Business & Finance Director II at MUSC Hollings Cancer Center is a strategic leadership opportunity within South Carolina’s only NCI-designated cancer center. As Hollings drives forward a bold, statewide growth plan—including the opening of new multidisciplinary cancer centers and the future launch of a purpose-built, fully integrated cancer hospital in Charleston—this role will be instrumental in shaping how academic-quality oncology services are operationalized across the MUSC Health system.
This elevated Business & Finance Director role combines responsibility for both enterprise oncology operations and robust business and financial oversight. The Cancer ICCE Business & Finance Director II will lead strategic projects, drive performance improvement initiatives, and serve as a critical partner to clinical and administrative leaders across care settings. In addition to leading service line alignment and operational execution, the Cancer ICCE Business & Finance Director II will directly manage the Oncology ICCE’s budgeting process, financial forecasting, and development of business pro formas—ensuring financial strategies and operational goals remain tightly integrated. The Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) Hollings Cancer Center—South Carolina’s only National Cancer Institute (NCI)-designated cancer center—seeks a highly collaborative and operationally skilled leader to serve as its inaugural Business & Finance Director II.
Key Responsibilities
Strategic Financial Planning & Analysis (25%)
- Develops and oversees proformas, ROI analyses, business plans, and long-range financial forecasts in collaboration with the Finance Planning Office.
- Supports strategic capital requests, service line expansion, and operational investments across cancer services.
- Leads financial modeling for new programs, partnerships, and enterprise initiatives within the Cancer ICCE.
- Participate in the development of system plans and various forms of analyses to support growth plans and opportunities to increase revenue sources / referral base for Cancer ICCE operations across the health system
- Collaborate with appropriate stakeholders including ambulatory leaders, analysts, divisional leaders and practice plan leaders, external benchmarking sources and any other appropriate resources to create operational and project plans that will lead to systemic growth
- Partner with appropriate stakeholders, including COM and MUSCP, to develop multi-year forecasts of physician recruitment and departures for all Divisions
- Work with system leaders to collaborate on driving ambulatory efficiencies and optimization
Operational Financial Management (25%)
- Oversees daily, monthly, and annual financial performance for the Cancer ICCE.
- Develops and monitors financial KPIs, productivity metrics, and operational benchmarks for inpatient, outpatient, and support services.
- Coordinates the annual Cancer ICCE budget development process, ensuring alignment with system goals and funding priorities.
- Lead, develop and coordinate all operational and contribution margin reviews with key operational leaders across the health system
- Collaborate with College of Medicine, MUSC Physicians, MCP, and MUHA Finance & Accounting departments, CFOs, regional health leadership and other appropriate resources to project accurate volume, revenue, and expense budgets each fiscal year and other times when adjustments are required due to market demands
- Assist ICCE Leadership to initiate corrective action plans for any performance variance or other Opportunity for Improvements (OFIs) identified
- Identify performance gaps and recommend actionable improvements
Collaboration & Leadership (15%)
- Acts as a strategic financial advisor to the Cancer ICCE Chief and Cancer System Administrative Officer.
- Serves as the liaison between Cancer ICCE leadership and corporate finance, analytics, procurement, and other shared services.
- Collaborates closely across the regional health network, MUSC Health system divisions, ambulatory operations, and academic departments to ensure alignment of financial strategy, planning, and execution.
- Oversees non-supply chain procurement activities in collaboration with relevant stakeholders.
Performance Measurement & Reporting (15%)
- Develops and maintains a Balanced Scorecard to track and report on financial and operational performance across cancer services.
- Work with ICCE leaders to develop operational projections and performance plans across all scorecard domains across the health system
- Prepares executive-level presentations and dashboards for senior leadership, summarizing trends, risks, and opportunities.
- Ensures integrity, standardization, and compliance in all financial reporting processes.
Project Management & Innovation (20%)
- Leads complex, cross-functional projects and initiatives assigned by the Cancer ICCE Chief or Cancer System Administrative Officer.
- Supports innovation in financial operations, reporting systems, and resource allocation strategies.
- Drives continuous improvement in business processes to support high-quality, value-based cancer care delivery.
- Maintain clear communication and provide regular updates to ICCE leadership and broader MUSC Health stakeholders regarding project status and performance outcomes
- Facilitate system-wide collaboration to ensure timely execution of operational plans and enterprise initiatives
Professional Qualifications
- Master’s degree in Health Administration, Finance, Accounting, Business, or a related field is required.
- Minimum of 5 year’s experience in a position of significant financial and supervisory responsibility in an academic medical institution required
- Knowledge of budgeting, operations, labor management, strategic planning, and satisfaction performance reporting systems and methodologies required.
- Proven ability to research, gather, synthesize and organize information to produce concise reports using various resources.
- Operational fluency in cancer care delivery across ambulatory, procedural, and inpatient settings.
- Must be proficient in the use of spreadsheets and have excellent oral and written communication skills to communicate complicated policies and procedures and financial information to a wide variety of audiences.
- Position must use discretion in handling a wide range of confidential information.
Preferred Qualifications
- Understanding of external regulatory requirements and effective compliance assurance methods preferred.
- Experience with contract negotiation, audit, and compliance is desired.
- Knowledge of cancer care operations in both academic and community-based environments.
- Familiarity with EHR systems (e.g., Epic), care coordination tools, and enterprise performance dashboards.
- Exposure to clinical trial integration, multidisciplinary care, or value-based oncology models.
