Job Description

Job Summary/ Purpose: The Division of Surgical Oncology is looking for a dynamic and patient-centered experienced Advanced Practice Provider to join our busy thriving and expanding abdominal surgical oncology/HPB practice. The successful applicant will be a board-certified APP interested in working full-time in caring for patients with HPB (hepato-pancreato-biliary) and upper GI malignancies, including retroperitoneal sarcomas. The APP's responsibilities include working in collaboration with 2-3 surgeons to evaluate and manage new surgical patients, coordinating complex perioperative and postoperative surgical care, and developing an independent survivorship clinic for patient cancer surveillance. Other clinical responsibilities include collaboration with the multi-disciplinary GI oncologic team to deliver top quality patient centered care and to participate in weekly GI tumor boards. The APP's practice will primarily be in the outpatient clinic setting with the opportunity for inpatient/perioperative follow-up and care management. The APP also has the opportunity (if qualified and interested) in first-assisting the surgeon/surgical team for operations (open, laparoscopic/robotic) and staffing of a weekly outpatient surgical procedure clinics (e.g., excisional biopsy, core needle biopsy, etc.). The GI Surgical Oncology clinics are located currently downtown at both the NCI-designated Hollings Cancer Center, MUSC Ashley River Tower, and MUSC Health East Mt. Pleasant. Additional outpatient future clinic sites could include MUSC Health Nexton Medical Park. The MUSC Abdominal Surgical Oncology/HPB Section provides high-quality, cutting-edge treatments to our patients (including robotic surgery, hepatic arterial infusion pump, and islet cell transplantation) and is a National Pancreas Foundation Center of Excellence. Our GI surgeons are seeking an APP that is outgoing, self-motivated, detail-oriented, and energetic to support their high-volume clinical practice.


Fair Labor Standards Act Status: Salaried/Exempt


Hours per week: 40

Scheduled Work Hours/Shift: Monday-Friday, 8-5pm

Patient Population Focus: Outpatient, OR/First Assist possible

Patient Population Age Range: 13 years - Death

Required Training and Experience:


Required Minimum Training: Completion of an accredited Physician Assistant program and currently licensed or eligible for licensure as a Physician Assistant or completion of an accredited Nurse Practitioner Program and currently licensed or eligible for licensure as an APRN as noted below.

  • Physician Assistant

or

  • APRN License Type/Certification:

    • AGPNP/ANP (Adult Gerontology Primary Care NP or Adult NP): Adult pts (13 years to death), stable chronic disease state management or primary care setting.

    • FNP (Family NP): (birth to death) Stable chronic disease state management, primary care across the lifespan.

Required Experience: BLS and ACLS

Preferred Training and Experience:

Preferred Training: Physician Assistant (PA) or if APRN, License Type/Certification identified below:

  • Physician Assistant

or

  • APRN

    • AGACNP/ACNP (Adult Gerontology Acute Care NP/Acute Care Nurse Practitioner): Adult pts (13 years to death), acutely ill or injured, potentially unstable, or technologically dependent (vents, drips, monitors, etc.)

    • Registered Nurse First Assist Certification (RNFA)

Preferred Experience: 3-5 years of experience in Abdominal Surgical Oncology/HPB Surgery as an PA/APP. Oncology experience preferred. Experience as First Assist in OR doing robotic cases preferred.

Degree of Supervision
Advanced Practice Registered Nurse or Physician Assistant will be assigned a Primary Supervising/Collaborating Physician employed by MUSC and will report directly to this physician.

Required Licensure, Certifications, Registrations

All certifications must be current and complete prior to start date:

  • Basic Life Support (BLS).

  • Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS)

  • DHEC and DEA license applications must be started prior to first day.

Job Duties:

Provides direct care to patients through the following activities:

  • Takes comprehensive history and performs physical examinations

  • Evaluates and treats on the basis of history, physical examination, radiological, laboratory, and other diagnostic test results pursuant to the practice agreement or scope of practice guideline

  • Performs the following therapeutic procedures in accordance with procedural privileges, skill and proficiency as approved by the Clinical Division Chief:

    • Superficial incision and drainage of surgical wounds or abscess

    • Suturing of drains and wounds

    • Punch biopsy

    • Seroma aspirations

    • Surgical and IR drain removal

    • Removal of staples

    • Placement and removal of nasogastric and/or feeding tubes

  • Initiates referrals to other health care providers, and/or consults with the attending physician or the collaborating physician

  • Documents and bills for direct care provided

  • Utilizes current research and evidence-based decision-making in all clinical practice

  • Performs and participates in quality/performance improvement activities and clinical research

  • Participates in and supports accreditation, compliance, and regulatory activities of the organization

  • Demonstrates responsibility for professional practice through active participation in professional organizations and continuing education

  • Potential to precept students at MUSC enrolled as an advanced practice provider student; and facilitates the learning of other new team members

  • APRN or PA must maintain licenses, certifications, CNEs/CMEs, etc. as required by applicable policies and state law

  • Additional job duties per Department/role:

    • Active participant in GI tumor board

    • Participate in GI clinical trials

    • Obtain surgical consents, tumor board consents

    • Travel to clinic sites in West Ashley, Mt Pleasant and Nexton with possible expansion to other sites.

Physical Requirements

Continuous requirements are to perform job functions while standing, walking and sitting. Ability to bend at the waist, kneel, climb stairs, reach in all directions, fully use both hands and legs, possess good finger dexterity, perform repetitive motions with hands/wrists/elbows and shoulders, reach in all directions. Ability to be qualified physically for respirator use, initially and as required. Maintain 20/40 vision corrected, see and recognize objects close at hand and at a distance, work in a latex safe environment and work indoors. Frequently lift, lower, push and pull and/or carry objects weighing 50 lbs. (+/-) unassisted, exert up to 50 lbs. of force, lift from 36" to overhead 25 lbs. Infrequently work in dusty areas and confined/cramped spaces.

Additional Job Description

Graduation from an approved Physician Assistant program accredited by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA) or its predecessor agencies. Must be licensed in the state of South Carolina, and certified as a Physician Assistant by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA). Current American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) certification or American Red Cross BLS for Healthcare Providers certification is required
