Job Description Summary

MUSC is seeking a Sterile Processing Technician to join our team in providing critical care to procedural areas across our healthcare enterprise. Sterile Processing Technicians ensure procedural equipment consistently meets the highest quality and safety standards and is ready for use by all areas across the healthcare enterprise. This position receives and processes incoming supplies and equipment including performing cleaning and sterilizing duties and is an integral part of the daily operation of all units.

Duties include:

• Maintain adequate inventory for assembly of instruments and equipment
• Perform and participate in the decontamination and cleaning of all instrumentation received, which include but are not limited to instrumentation and equipment received from all units according to established standards and procedures
• Prepare case carts and trays for decontamination and load them into washer and/or sterilizer as prescribed procedure
• Perform the operation of the index washers, cart washers, ultrasonic cleaners as well as manually cleaning instruments and equipment as prescribed by established standards and procedures
• Inspects all instruments for cleanliness, proper function, and breakage by viewing the instruments before assembly
• Uses appropriate container, wrap or pouch according to the size of the instrument or equipment
• Sterilizes instruments and surgical trays by following prescribed policies and procedures
• Know how to run tests on all sterilizers, monitor and document that all parameters have been met
• Use chemicals in the appropriate fashion taking into consideration the intended use of chemical as well as chemicals function: knowledge of appropriate PPE is also necessary
• Participates in expediting the OR schedule by assisting the other members of the OR Team in obtaining the instruments/equipment necessary for the procedure in a timely manner Assembles and distributes case carts accurately and in a timely manner
• Ability to travel between sites as needed, based on departmental needs

Job Description

Required Education and Experience:

MUSC offers a career ladder with pay based on experience and certification obtained:

Non-Certified Sterile Processing Technician – High school diploma or GED

Sterile Processing Technician I – High school diploma or GED, and certification through CRCST - HSPA (Healthcare Sterile Processing Association) or CBSPD (Certification Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution)

Sterile Processing Technician II - High school diploma or GED, and certification through CRCST - HSPA (Healthcare Sterile Processing Association) or CBSPD (Certification Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution). At least twelve (12) months’ experience in sterile processing required for this role

Sterile Processing Technician III - High school diploma or GED, and certification through CRCST - HSPA (Healthcare Sterile Processing Association) or CBSPD (Certification Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution). At least two (2) years of experience in sterile processing required for this role

No certification? No problem! MUSC offers a certification incentive and bonus program that will help pay for your certification as well as a provide a bonus after you achieve your certification.

MUSC also offers an intensive 12-week training program for those new to our team. This includes a rotation between site-work and a designated training location, with training schedules rotating between varying schedules on site and 7:00am – 3:30pm at the training location.

Preferred Requirements:

  • Completion of a Sterile Processing or Surgical Technologist program
  • Basic computer skills and use of an EMR system
  • Knowledge of instrumentation
  • Strong customer service and communication skills

Shift Information:

Shifts are offered on varying schedules based on the needs of each area:

First shift – 7:00am – 3:30pm

Second shift – 3:00pm – 11:30pm

Third shift – 11:00pm – 7:30am

Weekend shifts – 7:00am – 7:00pm, or 7:00pm – 7:00am

Holiday and emergency management or disaster work is required.

Weekend rotation may be required.

(F) Examples include: To transfer a 100 lb. patient that cannot assist in the transfer requires 50 lbs. of force. For every 100 additional pounds, assistance will be required from another healthcare worker. 20 lbs. of force is needed to push a 400 lb. patient in a wheelchair on carpet. 25 lbs. of force is required to push a stretcher with a patient with one hand. Ability to maintain vision 20/40 corrected. (C) Ability to see and recognize objects close at hand or at a distance. (C) Ability to match or discriminate between colors. (C) Ability to determine distance/relationships between objects; depth perception. (C) Good peripheral vision capabilities. (C) Ability to maintain hearing acuity, with correction.
