Research Specialist III – Electron Microscopy Core

Job Summary:

This position serves in an integral and independent role in the daily operation of the Electron Microscopy Clinical Core Facility, performing all aspects of specimen preparation and analysis leading to production of ultra-thin sections, examining specimens with a transmission electron microscope and capturing and storing digital images for transfer to clinicians and investigators.

Job Responsibilities:

25% Complete all fixation, embedding, staining, and sectioning protocols necessary to generate samples for the production of thick and thin sections for electron microscopic examination.

25% Maintain and operate the transmission electron microscope to generate and store appropriate digital images used in diagnostic protocols.

20% Inventory, order and maintain all supplies critical to laboratory function and communicate with electron microscopy service providers to ensure fully functional instrumentation essential for timely specimen preparation and analysis.

15% Record, label and document all clinical specimens received by the laboratory and ensure that records and results are maintained and transmitted to clinicians and other users of the laboratory.

10% Maintain and update all protocols and other information required for annual CAP inspections in the database provided.

5% Cross train existing personnel in the research core to provide emergency back up for specimen pick up and processing.

Minimum Qualifications:

A bachelor’s degree in chemistry, biology, or other natural, life or health care science directly related to the assigned area of research and two years advanced journey-level work experience in a clinical or research setting.
