Job Description

The James B. Edwards College of Dental Medicine, Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC CDM) is seeking applications for a full-time Deputy Director for its Center for Rural Oral Health Research and Community Engagement in Mullins, SC. The Deputy Director’s primary role is to oversee a portfolio of rural oral health training initiatives designed specifically to address rural oral health inequities. The Deputy Director serves as the point of contact and lead administrator for faculty desiring to conduct research through the Center and its statewide and regional partnerships. The faculty position is in the Department of Biomedical & Community Health Sciences with an appointment in the Division of Population Oral Health. Qualified candidates may have the option of the faculty appointment classified on tenure track, based on qualifications.

Administrative Responsibilities. The Deputy Director supports the Director with all aspects of the daily operations of the Center including but not limited to supervision of Center staff, project management of grants and research initiatives, development of new service and outreach opportunities, and coordination of community events. Because the position is based in Marion, the Deputy Director serves as the point of contact for issues related to the physical building such as security, information technology and security, and reporting damage or repair needs.

Education Responsibilities. The Deputy Director provides leadership to continuing education initiatives convened by and at the Center. The position also serves as the Course Director for Preventive Dentistry, a required course for the predoctoral dental program. The position is expected to guest lecture in additional courses as appropriate.

Research Responsibilities. The Deputy Director is expected to develop independent and collaborative research with MUSC and MUSC Health colleagues, as well as partners from communities and other academic institutions. The position will serve as a co-investigator on a portfolio of existing funded research awarded to the College.

Previous experience working in an academic environment and dental safety net setting such as a community health center is required. Experience working with dental practices and dental benefit administrators is preferred.

Successful applicants must be a licensed dental hygienist, and have a Masters of Public Health degree and PhD (or equivalent terminal degree, e.g. DrPH, DSc) in health services research, public health, public policy, or similar discipline area. At least 10 years of professional work experience is required.
