Job Description:

The purpose of this Research Specialist position is to assist with administrative tasks and perform advanced specialized techniques for the study of retinal angiogenesis. The position requires work with human tissues and animals.

MUSC Minimum Training and Experience Requirements:

A bachelor's degree in chemistry, biology, or other natural, life or health care science directly related to the assigned area of research and two years advanced journal-level work experience in a clinical or research setting.

Preferred Requirements:

A Master of Science degree in biology or other natural life science is required. A minimum of ten (10) years’ work experience in a research laboratory setting with experience in advanced research techniques and lab organization is required. The successful applicant will be familiar with vision research, especially with techniques utilized to study ocular neovascularization.

Job Duties:

30%- Perform organizational and administrative tasks such as ordering, records keeping, organizing the laboratory, and communicating with the Department of Laboratory Animal Resources (DLAR) and other university research and regulatory offices.

20%- Perform flow cytometry analysis of ocular tissue.

20%- Conduct ex vivo or in vitro studies of angiogenesis, including choroidal sprouting assay, cell co-culture studies, and primary culture.

15%- Organize and analyze results of physiological, biochemical and molecular measurements with computer software (specialized imaging software, Excel, and other); maintain experimental and animal records.

15%- Maintain equipment and tools used for experiments.

(Frequent) Ability to push/ Ability to lift 40 lbs. centrifuge rotors from floor level to height of 40 inches, then down 20 inches into centrifuge drum, unassisted. (Infrequent) Ability to lift 25 lbs. boxes, from floor level to maximum height of 72 inches, unassisted. (Infrequent) Ability to push/pull file boxes from one location to another at floor level. (Frequent) Ability to maneuver heavy equipment on bench tops, 50 lbs. or greater, unassisted. (Frequent) Ability to perform gross motor functions with frequent fine motor movements. (Continuous) Ability to maintain 20/40 vision, corrected, in one eye or with both eyes. (Continuous) Ability to match or discriminate between colors, normally. (Continuous) Ability to hear and recognize various alarms emitting from work area systems. (Continuous) Ability to hear and/or understand conversations. (Continuous) Ability to work in a darkroom for processing film, etc. (Continuous) Ability to be qualified physically for respirator use, initially and annually.
