Job Description Summary

The Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, Medical University of South Carolina is seeking an academically oriented Molecular Pathology Laboratory Director with 2 to 10 years of experience; current trainees will also be considered. Rank and salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. The Laboratory Director of Molecular Pathology will oversee a largely automated molecular microbiology and molecular genetics and genomics laboratory and collaboratively support the Directors of the Cytogenetic and Genomics Laboratory and Microbiology Laboratory in terms of variant science, teaching activities, genetics and genomics validation and verification studies (LDT and RUO), accreditation activities, MolDx technical assessment preparation and/or review, and participation in applicable research and/or industry grants. Strong interest or formal education and/or certification in microbiology, bioinformatics, or other genetic or genomic subspecialty is preferred. Current certification for lab direction of high complexity testing is required; ACMG certification in Laboratory Genetics & Genomics is preferred. Ideally, the faculty member should be proficient in the interpretation of results for those techniques employed in the clinical work-up of cases for precision medicine (genetics and genomics) and have advanced practical and diagnostic skills in next generation sequencing. The successful candidate will have knowledge and experience in new molecular genomic and genetic test development validation, and implementation. Fostering collaborative relationships with clinicians and researchers as well as serving as a resource to technologists at the bench will be expected. This individual will instruct medical students, participate in the training of pathology residents and fellows, and actively participate in the academic mission of the Department and the NCI-designed Hollings Cancer Center programs. The relative percent effort for research, teaching, administrative duties, and patient care responsibilities will be tailored to the successful applicant’s experience and career goals. The Department offers an ACGME-accredited fellowship training program in Molecular Genetic Pathology for which the candidate will play a key educational role. Close collaboration with the Anatomic and Clinical Pathology teams including their trainees is expected.

MUSC Minimum Qualifications

Ph.D., M.D. (with relevant ABP Board Certification) or equivalent degree. Certification for direction of high complexity laboratory by HHS-approved agency is required for Ph.D. applicants.
