Job Description Summary

Provides MUSC Office of General Counsel with paralegal assistance as well as administrative support, with focus on litigation-related support. Duties include complex legal and non-legal research; pleadings and subpoena receipt and processing; retrieval of responsive information from a variety of sources and stakeholders in order to comply with orders, search warrants, subpoenas and FOIA requests directed to MUSC/MUHA and UMA; coordinates interaction with external counsel; and acts as liaison for the University, Hospital, and UMA in response to legal demands from the community. Prepares documents, letters legal pleadings, and memoranda for the MUSC Assistant General Counsel.

Job Description

Knowledge of legal & medical terminology required. An understanding of court rules and procedures is required and familiarity with Charleston, Berkeley and Dorchester courts is preferred. Must be capable of working independently and without supervision. Must be able to make independent decisions and use of personal discretion in a high stress environment is essential. College degree required and certificate from a paralegal institute preferred. Familiarity with legal research and writing is preferred. Three years of legal assistance experience required. Must be able to communicate effectively both orally and in writing and must have good organizational skills.
