Job Description Summary

Dr. Toros Dincman at the Medical University of South Carolina, in collaboration with the Laboratory of Dr. Philip Howe, is seeking applicants for a Research Specialist I position. Responsibilities of this position will include performing experiments involving molecular biology, cell culture and biochemical assays, laboratory mice, and data analysis. Prior experience with in vitro work is preferred. Research interests focus on the role of RNA-Binding Proteins (RBP) and their impact on Colorectal Cancer (CRC) biology. Specifically, utilizing relevant pre-clinical CRC models, we seek to uncover novel pathways that involve RBP mutations and expression changes which influence CRC progression and therapeutic response. This work is facilitated by a highly collaborative laboratory group with access to state-of-the-art scientific equipment.

Job Description

Job Duties:

35% - Experiments investigating cellular and molecular mechanisms of RBP impact on CRC.

  • Cell culture

  • Utilizing cell and molecular biology techniques including protein, RNA and DNA isolation and separation, Western blotting, PCR, qPCR, flow cytometry, Co-Immunoprecipitation, RNA Immunoprecipitation, CRISPR-Cas9, molecular cloning, transfections and gene expression assays, cell proliferation and apoptosis assays, electroporation, confocal microscopy, and immunofluorescence staining

  • Developing and optimizing protocols for in vitro experiments

35% - Data analysis and presentation

  • Graphing and visualization of data with software including Graphpad Prism, FlowJo, Snapgene, Biorender, Microsoft Powerpoint, Microsoft Excel, and Adobe Illustrator

  • Presenting data during lab meetings

  • Preparing publication quality figures, may be involved in writing of manuscripts

  • Efforts will directly contribute to grant applications and manuscripts

15% - Small laboratory animals

  • Collection and processing of tissues for downstream analysis

  • Monitoring of tumor growth with in vivo imaging

  • Oversee overlapping experiments

15% - General laboratory responsibilities

  • Maintenance of laboratory instruments, supplies, and equipment

  • Maintenance of laboratory notebooks and records related to protocols, policy and regulation

  • Assist with ordering reagents and supplies

Preferred Experience & Additional Skills: A bachelor’s degree in chemistry, biology, or other natural, life or health care science and ideally at least one-year of work experience related to the assigned research area. Previous experience in cell culture, molecular biology, and/or skills listed under Job Duties below is preferred.

A high school diploma and two years work experience in a clinical or research setting; a bachelor's degree in chemistry, biology, or other natural, life or health care science may be substituted for the two years of required experience.
