Job Description Summary

The College of Medicine is seeking an ambitious, forward-thinking individual for a full-time grant-funded position as a clinical pharmacy specialist (academic detailer) for educational outreach to South Carolina Medicaid providers. The candidate will be responsible for establishing relationships with physicians and other health care providers, then visiting them on various behavioral clinical topics one-on-one or in small groups to discuss topic highlights and questions and share provider and patient tools to support day to day clinical practice. The candidate must also be prepared to deliver content through other suitable venues and assist with the development of topic materials.

Candidate can work remotely from anywhere within the state of South Carolina. This position includes periodic regional travel to physician practices and other provider locations within the state. A home base in the upstate is preferred, not required.

Job Description

Primary Purpose: tipSC is an educational outreach service that offers evidence-informed, objective, timely information to Medicaid providers to promote optimal prescribing and patient care decisions. The service distills available evidence, guidances, and clinical experiences into practical information resources. Information is delivered to healthcare providers through academic detailing under the umbrella of the SCORxE Academic Detailing Service, conference presentations, and printed/electronic educational materials.

Nature of Work: The clinical pharmacist will be clinically upskilled on each topic area, receive training and orientation in academic detailing, and deliver information to physicians and other health care providers through academic detailing visits where highlights and questions can be discussed one-on-one or in small group discussions and other suitable venues (e.g., conference presentations). Topic areas primarily fall under the behavioral health umbrella. Responsibilities involve both independent and interprofessional collaborative project work on various clinical topics. The position requires a Doctor of Pharmacy degree from an ACPE-accredited College/School of Pharmacy and an active South Carolina Pharmacist license. A high level of organization and adaptability is required. Strong interpersonal skills, collaborative problem solving, and the ability to work efficiently and meet deadlines are important attributes.

Job Duties:

35% -

  • Attend topic-related educational events and participate in training sessions on each clinical topic

  • Review handout materials and topic-specific documents that support both internal training and interactive office visits

  • Network with physicians, pharmacists, and other health care professionals to help identify and obtain consensus and support for topic key messages/highlights

  • Contact practices to set up appointments for academic detailing visits

  • Conduct academic detailing office visits (in-person and virtual) to discuss key messages that promote evidence-informed practice behavior change or validate current practice

  • Document meaningful details of each office visit, including significant discussion items or questions requiring follow-up

  • Provide appropriate support between visits as needed (e.g., follow-up visit, response to question)

  • Collaborate with the MUSC Drug Information Center in response to provider questions related to educational outreach topics

  • Contribute to decision making and judgement in determining research questions for a given clinical topic

30% -

  • Present or facilitate conference presentations, trainings, or small group workshops to disseminate core content, and team with other healthcare professionals to synergize educational outreach activities

  • Assist with student training to extend the breadth of educational outreach

  • Provide other related duties as assigned relating to tipSC educational outreach and the SCORxE Academic Detailing Service

Preferred Requirements, Knowledge, and Skills: Applicants must have the qualifications and interpersonal skills to serve as a clinical pharmacy specialist for practitioners and earn the respect of those visited. Applicants should have excellent written and verbal communication skills, knowledge of evidence-based principles, and the ability to problem solve and effectively coordinate responsibilities. A high level of adaptability, flexibility, and organization is required.

Required Knowledge and Skills: Applicants for the position should possess a Doctor of Pharmacy degree from an ACPE-accredited College/School of Pharmacy, have an active South Carolina Pharmacy license, and a strong interest in improving patient care through provider education.
