Job Description Summary

The Certified Tumor Registrar reports to the Cancer Registry Program Manager. Under general supervision, the Certified Tumor Registrar analyzes, abstracts and codes demographic, patient and cancer-related information, treatment and staging from the medical records on all reportable cases seen and/or diagnosed at MUSC Health. The Certified Tumor Registrar uses quantitative and qualitative decision making to identify all reportable cancer cases as well as code accurately. This position supports Cancer Registry team members and their stakeholders across the clinical and research enterprise by providing high-quality accurate data. This role assists by providing quality data to support strategic decision making and ongoing optimization of organizational performance and maintaining MUSC’s CoC, NAPBC, and NAPRC accreditations.

Job Description

Identifies, registers, and maintains records of all cancer patients by using a tumor registry data system. Analyzes data and releases information in adherence to established ethical standards. May require an associate degree or its equivalent.

Additional Job Description

High school diploma or GED and three years of experience in cancer registry or related field; OR a bachelor’s degree in Health Sciences, Health Information Management, or related discipline and two years of experience in cancer registry or related field. Must be a Certified Tumor Registrar in good standing with the National Cancer Registrar’s Association. Demonstrated proficiency in abstracting data and using technology preferred. Minimum of 1 year abstracting in a hospital setting preferred.

Must possess analytical skills to evaluate and make accurate coding decisions based on rules by the Cancer Registry Standard setters. Must have basic knowledge of the disease process of malignancies and standards of care. Must understand the capabilities and limitations of information technology and clinical information systems. Must be able to demonstrate solid abstracting skills in terms of ability to find needed data, analyze and code it with accurate text backup for coding decisions.

Required Licensure, Certifications, Registrations: Special certification as a Certified Tumor Registrar (CTR) in good standing with the National Cancer Registrars Association credentialing institution required.
