The Battery Cell Technician role is an integral part of our dynamic Innovation team within the Performance Materials Technical group. Based at our North Charleston facility, this hands-on position will involve working closely with battery scientists and engineers to develop cutting-edge battery technologies. The successful candidate will engage in the design, fabrication, and testing of lithium-ion and Sodium-ion batteries, contributing to our innovative projects and helping drive our growth in the battery materials sector.

How you will impact Ingevity:

  • Laboratory and Equipment Management: Operate and maintain lab and pilot scale equipment, including battery assembly and testing apparatus, in compliance with safety and quality standards.
  • Battery Fabrication: Assemble lithium-ion and Sodium-ion batteries in various formats, including coin cells and pouch cells, using manual and semi-automated techniques.
  • Testing and Analysis: Conduct electrochemical performance tests on battery cells to evaluate and enhance material properties. Document experimental procedures and results accurately in both written and electronic formats.
  • Collaboration: Work closely with cross-functional teams, including materials scientists, engineers, and quality control personnel, to support product development and process improvement efforts.
  • Safety and Compliance: Adhere to all health, safety, and environmental (HS&E) policies, maintaining a clean and safe work environment.

Qualifications:

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in chemistry, physics, chemical engineering, materials science and engineering, electrical engineer, mechanical engineering, or a related scientific field is required.
  • Experience: At least 2 years of experience in a laboratory or manufacturing environment. Familiarity with coin cell and pouch cell fabrication processes is a plus.
  • Technical Skills: Proficiency in operating laboratory equipment. Experience with electrode slurry mixing, coating and automated cell fabrication systems is desirable.
  • Analytical and time management Abilities: Attention to detail, and high standards for data accuracy, organization and reporting. Strong analytical, observational, and time management skills.
  • Communication: Effective communication skills to collaborate with team members and share information clearly and proactively. Ability to work respectfully and effectively within a diverse team.
  • Safety: Strong commitment to safety protocols and practices.
  • Strong work ethic, initiative, and flexibility.
  • This position requires 100% on-site presence at our North Charleston facility; remote work is not an option.

Desired Competencies:

  • Technical Expertise: Experience with advanced battery processing and fabrication equipment, such as slurry mixer, coater, ultrasonic welders and vacuum sealers. Knowledge of electrolyte handling and cell assembly techniques is highly valued.
