JOB SUMMARY

The purpose of the class is to perform the custodial maintenance of County buildings to ensure a clean and safe environment for staff and visitors, train and supervise assigned Custodians, and to perform related work as required. The class works according to set procedures under minimal supervision.

Duties

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Supervises assigned staff. Supervisory duties include instructing; assigning, reviewing and planning work of others; maintaining standards; coordinating activities; selecting new employees; acting on employee problems; recommending employee discipline; and recommending discharge as appropriate.

Reviews the work of staff members for completeness and accuracy; evaluates and makes recommendations as appropriate; and offers advice and assistance as needed.

Provides general custodial maintenance of assigned County buildings and facilities including walk ways, stairways, elevators, offices, kitchen areas, lobby areas, courtrooms, judge chambers and restrooms.

Provides Custodial training on cleaning and safety instructions.

Maintains Cleaning Solution Chemical Usage Log and reviews with Risk Management.

Trains new employees on time clock, badge access, parking procedures, equipment usage, checklist tasks and inventory control.

Conducts unannounced inspections of custodial work.

Performs various custodial duties, which include, but are not limited to: cleaning and sanitizing restrooms, cleaning kitchen areas, polishing water fountains, cleaning windows and other glass surfaces, cleaning base boards, dusting and polishing furniture and other surfaces, cleaning window blinds, removing trash, sweeping and mopping floors, scrubbing/polishing floors, stripping and waxing floors, vacuuming/spot cleaning/shampooing carpets, etc.

Cleans porches, walkways, etc.

Stocks restrooms with supplies.

Delivers supplies to buildings in St George, Dorchester, Summerville, and North Charleston.

Checks to see if lights are working; performs light building maintenance as required, performing minor repairs of equipment, etc.

Maintains security of locked doors and windows.

Performs all work in compliance with division policies, procedures and standards of cleanliness, quality and safety.

Maintains assigned vehicles and equipment; initiates repair work as needed.

Provides coverage for special meetings such as County Council meetings.

Requests necessary tools, materials and supplies.

Receives and responds to inquiries, requests for assistance and complaints from County employees and the public.

Attends training as required to enhance job knowledge and skills.

Performs small repair work.

Serves as Courier in their absence.

Maintains accurate and complete records of work performed.

Performs other related job duties as assigned.


Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience:

High school diploma or GED.

Requires at least two (2) years of related work experience.

Supervisory experience preferred.

Special Qualifications:

Must possess a valid South Carolina driver’s license.

Work is performed in a safe and secure work environment that may periodically have unpredicted requirements and demands.

Position Type and Expected Hours of Work

This is a full-time position; typical work hours and days are Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Some flexibility in hours is allowed, but employees must be available during the “core” work hours of 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m., must be able to work a split shift is necessary, and must work 40 hours each week to maintain full-time status. Employees must be available to work evenings, weekends and holidays during emergencies or as requested.
