The purpose of the class is to enforce all local, federal and state laws relating to public safety and welfare; to perform general police work, responding to calls for service; and to perform related work as required. The class works within a general outline of work to be performed, and develops work methods and sequences under general supervision.
Duties

· Enforces all local, federal and state laws relating to public safety and welfare; performs all duties in compliance with applicable policies, procedures, laws, regulations and standards of safety.

· Performs general law enforcement duties including, but not limited to: patrolling assigned areas of the County; checking on property; responding to public calls for assistance; enforcing traffic laws; responding to traffic incidents; maintaining order and public safety; and apprehending/arresting suspected law violators and criminal suspects.

· Serves warrants and civil process papers; creates and completes Affidavits of Service for various courts.

· Participates in criminal investigations, including such duties as collecting evidence, processing crime scenes, interviewing victims and witnesses, interrogating suspects, conducting surveillance/undercover/raid operations, etc.

· Assists in preparing cases for prosecution; provides court testimony as necessary.

· Performs routine service duties including, but not limited to, providing escort service for the protection of persons and/or property, writing tickets, assisting stranded motorists, providing funeral escort, directing traffic, providing security and crowd control at special events, etc.

· Serves Order of Detentions; apprehends, detains and transports mentally unstable individuals to mental health facilities and hospitals; and transports mental health patients and criminal suspects to various locations as directed.

· Repossesses vehicles and real property, including homes/residences.

· Conducts welfare checks on citizens.

· May provide court security.

· May perform specialized police duties as assigned, including K-9 investigations, narcotics investigations, marine patrol, etc.

· May patrol school, give class instruction to students, mentor students, assist principals with problems, make sure campus is secure, and ensure that students and staff are safe.

· Prepares and submits detailed work records and reports.

· Testifies in court as required.

· Maintains assigned equipment and vehicles.

· Participates in neighborhood and community relations programs; attends neighborhood meetings and community events to enhance police/community relationships and to address safety and quality of life issues.

· Receives and responds to citizens' inquiries, concerns and complaints concerning law enforcement activities.

· Attends periodic training sessions and attends conferences and meetings to keep abreast of current law enforcement and investigative trends, technology and legislation; maintains required physical fitness and required level of proficiency in the use of firearms.

· Remains on call 24 hours per day, seven days per week.

· Performs general clerical work as required including, but not limited to, completing and processing administrative and police forms, preparing reports and correspondence, entering and retrieving computer data, copying and filing documents, answering the telephone, etc.

· Performs other related job duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education and Experience:
High school diploma or GED supplemented by the completion of required law enforcement coursework.

Special Qualifications:
Must possess a valid state driver's license.
Must possess Basic Law Enforcement certification.
Must meet other requirements as set forth in applicable South Carolina statutes and regulations.
May require additional professional or technical certification(s) as deemed necessary by the Sheriff.

If you have an out of state license, you must obtain a valid SC Driver's License prior to attending the SC Law Enforcement Academy.

• For SC: Certified copy of 10 Year Driving Record

If you have been licensed to drive out of state within the last five (5) years a certified driving record is required from that state.

• Waiver and Acknowledgment, signed and notarized



Once contacted for employment you must successfully complete the following:

1. Oral interview board

2. Standardized comprehension test (Nelson-Denny)

3. Polygraph examination

4. Physical agility test (Reserve Deputy, Deputy Sheriff and Detention Officer)

5. Background Check

6. Final Interview – prior to employment offer
