Job Summary
The Customer Projects Designer I position is available in the Charleston Metro Crew Quarters and is responsible for planning, designing, and coordinating electric distribution work orders. Qualified applicants must have strong technical aptitude, possess basic computer skills and have the ability to learn the National Electric Code (NEC), National Electrical Safety Code (NESC), and electric operations. This position will require that the successful candidate work on site - this position does not offer remote work or a hybrid schedule.
This role coordinates with internal and external customers for the design and installation of electric distribution facilities. The Customer Projects Designer will communicate company policy, procedures and electric service requirements to customers and will coordinate with them to provide electric service. Using project management skills, the Customer Project Designer will determine material, create cost estimates, perform engineering calculations, create technical designs, negotiate easements, secure permits, conduct customer meetings, and coordinate with internal and external stakeholders for construction, maintenance, and relocation of electric distribution facilities.
Additional responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Analyzing electrical load data, performing calculations to determine the size and location of electric distribution facilities, inspecting project sites, designating facility placement, determining metering requirements, preparing service agreements, and creating detailed drawings utilizing Auto-Cad, Arc-FM, or other tools as appropriate.
- Utilizing a work management system to prepare cost estimates based on design of new construction or modification of existing facilities.
- Coordinating with company construction resources as well as external contracted resources to facilitate the construction of electric distribution projects.
- Preparing underground conversion agreements, performing revenue calculations, setting up billing agreements, coordinating construction with other utilities (i.e. cable television, phone, etc.), reconciling material inventory, and performing construction as-builts to ensure mapping accuracy in GIS.
- Performs service restoration activities during outages and storm events which will require after hours availability in certain situations.
- Identifies safety issues - Checks equipment and work area regularly to ensure safety and compliance;
- Identifies hazards and improvements that could prevent safety problems;
- Evaluates impact of decisions and actions on own and others' safety.
- Perform other duties as requested or assigned.
Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities & Experience
Minimum Requirements (Note: A partial year of related work experience of 6 months or greater will be considered one year towards the qualifications):
- 0 - 2+ years related experience with an Associate's degree OR
- 2+ years related experience with a High School diploma or GED
Additional Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Basic knowledge of electric distribution design, electricity, company policies and procedures, and mainframe and personal computer;
- Skills: Must have interpersonal and communication skills in person, by phone and in writing. Must have computer knowledge and skills including Microsoft Office products. Must have project management, problem-solving, time management, troubleshooting, mathematical and organizational skills.
- Abilities: effectively interact with customers; manage multiple projects and customer requests on an ongoing basis; teaming; detail oriented;
- Physical attributes to perform essential function: walking, climbing, stooping, bending and prolonged standing.
Education Requirements
Degree or an equivalent combination of education and demonstrated related experience may be accepted in lieu of preferred level of education: Associates
Disciplines: Preferred: Business; Engineering; Engineering Technology; Liberal Arts
Other disciplines may be substituted for the preferred discipline(s) listed above.
