Position Description
The Student Success Librarian at the College of Charleston Libraries is an adaptable and resourceful faculty member who plays a pivotal role in providing innovative and engaging library instruction to support the College’s strategic priorities for student retention, persistence, and graduation. This librarian will collaborate and engage with faculty and staff colleagues across the Libraries and the College to develop and deliver credit-bearing, scheduled, and point-of-need instruction that empowers users to locate, evaluate, and ethically use information resources within the ACRL Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education. Additionally, this position supports first-year, transfer, and other at-promise student populations through targeted outreach and engagement initiatives. The Student Success Librarian is a tenure-track member of the library faculty. The salary range for this position is $70,000 to $74,000, commensurate with experience.
Position Breakdown by Percentage of Effort
Student Success and Engagement, 50%
  • Cultivate and sustain collaborative relationships with other campus units and programs that support the College’s student success initiatives.
  • Collaborate with the College’s Office for Student Success to analyze student success and engagement data to identify trends and target library outreach toward populations most in need of support.
  • In consultation with other library units and campus offices, develop and deliver outreach programming, workshops, and orientation activities that connect first-year, transfer, and at-promise student populations to library services.
  • Develop instructional materials, research guides, and online tutorials that support student learning objectives and promote lifelong learning skills.
Instruction, 40%
  • Design, deliver, and assess credit-bearing courses and scheduled instruction sessions that are student-focused, guided by the ACRL Framework for Information Literacy, and incorporate reflective teaching practices.
  • Provide expert research assistance and point-of-need instruction to students, faculty, and staff through in-person and virtual consultations.
  • Participate in library-wide assessment activities to evaluate the effectiveness of library instruction programs and services.
Professional Growth and Development and Professional Service, 10%
  • Undertake research and/or professional development related to professional and scholarly interests.
  • Serve on library, College and professional committees, elected and assigned.

Minimum Requirements
  • Graduate degree in Library & Information Science (M.L.S. or equivalent) from an ALA-accredited program
  • Strong public service orientation with an aptitude for providing online and face-to-face information literacy instruction and research services in an academic library
  • Interest in student engagement and outreach
  • Excellent interpersonal, presentation, and instructional technology skills
  • Commitment to professional development and the ability to meet the research, teaching, service, and professional competency requirements for tenure and promotion advancement
  • Some evening and/or weekend work may be required
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience providing academic instruction.
  • Experience evaluating, selecting, and implementing instructional technologies, strategies, or tools for universal access in an academic library setting, as well as knowledge of current issues and trends in pedagogy.
