| Position Description | Full-time Instructor of Dance, Non-Tenure-Track COLLEGE OF CHARLESTON is accepting applications for a full-time, nine-month, non-tenure track appointment in the Department of Theatre and Dance. This appointment begins January 1, 2027. This is a full-time permanent position with a teaching load of four courses per semester. In the sixth year, the Instructor undergoes review for promotion to Senior Instructor. The Department of Theatre and Dance is NAST-accredited, offering BA and MAT degrees in Theatre and a BA in Dance. We seek a candidate who can inspire both beginning and experienced students in their initial dance studies and actively support the ongoing development of the Dance major. Regularly taught courses will serve as an entry point to dance students new to the department and those completing General Education requirements. The ideal candidate will bring expertise in one or more areas of dance technique, as well as the ability to teach non-Western dance practices, somatics, and/or theory-based courses. Responsibilities include teaching a full course load each semester (4/4); providing service to the department through recruitment efforts and serving on departmental committees; maintaining a record of professional development and sustained pedagogy; serving as an academic advisor to dance majors; guiding and assisting student participation in various conferences and festivals; and potentially choreographing for department productions as needed. Qualifications: MA, MFA, or PhD required by January 1, 2027; Professional experience/scholarship in dance; Prior undergraduate teaching experience strongly preferred. The ideal candidate is a dynamic educator passionate about mentoring students in a liberal arts program, possessing either an MFA or a PhD in Dance or a closely related discipline; has a minimum of three years’ experience teaching in post-secondary education; and has prior experience in student recruitment/advising/mentorship. Candidates who are currently active in and contributing to the dance field, either in traditional modes of scholarship or through creative practice, are preferred.
