Assistant Professor of Teacher Education (intellectual disabilities)

The School of Education at the College of Charleston invites applications for a full-time, nine-month tenure-track Assistant Professor of Teacher Education, with specialization in intellectual and developmental Ddsabilities, in the Department of Teacher Education. The anticipated start date is August 15, 2026.

This position is essential to supporting the continued growth and accreditation of the special education (SPED) program, particularly within the multicategorical licensure pathway. The successful candidate will contribute to undergraduate and graduate instruction, support online program delivery, and provide disciplinary expertise in Intellectual Disabilities as part of a collaborative SPED faculty team. The candidate is expected to maintain a scholarly research agenda and serve the program, department, and community.

Duties Include:
  • Teaching a standard tenure-track instructional load of 9 credit hours per semester (typically three sections) in special education, with emphasis on intellectual and developmental disabilities
  • Teaching in undergraduate and graduate programs, including courses delivered in fully online asynchronous formats
  • Contributing to the multicategorical special education program, which includes coursework in learning, emotional, and intellectual disabilities
  • Maintaining an active scholarly research agenda appropriate for a tenure-track appointment, including publication in peer-reviewed outlets
  • Advising and mentoring undergraduate and graduate students
  • Providing service to the department, School of Education, university, and relevant professional organizations
  • Supporting program recruitment and contributing to accreditation, assessment, and continuous improvement efforts

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Earned doctorate in Teacher Education with specialty in special education or a closely related field by the start date. ABD students with a firm defense date may be considered.
  • Demonstrated expertise in intellectual and developmental disabilities
  • Evidence of effective teaching at the college or university level
  • Ability to teach in online asynchronous environments
  • Potential for establishing a productive scholarly research agenda
  • Strong communication, collaboration, and organizational skills
  • At least 3 years of P-12 experience teaching students with intellectual/developmental disabilities

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience teaching in multicategorical special education programs
  • Experience with online program development and delivery
  • Familiarity with teacher licensure requirements in special education
  • Experience working with state- or grant-funded teacher preparation initiatives
  • Evidence of collaboration across institutions or community partners
