School/Area School of Humanities and Social Sciences
Department English
Position Description
The Department of English at the College of Charleston is seeking a Visiting Assistant Professor of English with an emphasis in African Literature & Film to begin on August 16, 2026. Required qualifications include a Ph.D. in English or a related field, a promising emerging research record, and the ability to contribute broadly to our curriculum in global anglophone literature.

Founded in 1770 and located in the heart of historic Charleston, South Carolina, the College of Charleston is a public liberal arts institution that strongly commits to the teacher-scholar model for its faculty. The English department offers a B.A. in English with three concentrations—Creative Writing, Literature & Film, and Writing, Rhetoric, & Publication—as well as an MFA in Creative Writing. We also offer a BA in Secondary English Education.

The standard teaching assignment is 12 credits per semester, covering all levels, including first-year writing courses, introductory and upper-level courses, and graduate courses that support the MFA program. Specific teaching assignments will include global Anglophone literature courses, such as “Survey of Modern Non-Western Literature” and “Contemporary Global Literature,” as well as courses on African literature and film. The flexibility to teach a non-Anglophone world literature survey is also desirable. Faculty are encouraged to develop courses informed by their interests, and to pursue affiliations with interdisciplinary programs such as African Studies, Film Studies, Medical Humanities, Environmental & Sustainability Studies, and Women’s & Gender Studies.
The College of Charleston, the School of Humanities and Social Sciences, and the Department of English are deeply committed to sustaining an inclusive and supportive work and learning environment.
Applicants should submit: (1) a cover letter; (2) a CV that includes the names and contact information for three references; (4) unofficial transcripts; and (3) a teaching philosophy by February 1 at https://jobs.cofc.edu/postings/17453.

Contact Department Chair Dr. Anton Vander Zee (vanderzeeal@cofc.edu) with questions about applying. Additional materials will be requested after the initial review, and preliminary interviews will be conducted on Zoom.
