Job Purpose
Assistant Director for Veterans Affairs manages the College’s Veterans Affairs Education Benefits Programs, ensuring compliance with federal, state, and institutional regulations. This role oversees veteran enrollments, benefit certifications, and requests for special accommodations, while providing counseling on financial aid and VA resources. The position also directs VA Work Study opportunities, supervises student employees, and engages in outreach efforts to promote services to veterans and the community. Through policy development, program oversight, and direct student support, the Assistant Director ensures veterans receive the resources necessary for academic and personal success.
Minimum Requirements
A Bachelor’s degree in a related field is required. Masters degree is preferred.

2–3 years of experience is required in one or more of these fields:
  • Financial aid administration.
  • Working with military-connected students or veterans.
  • Interpreting and applying federal/state regulations (especially VA and DOD education benefits) or comparable experience
  • Experience with GI Bill® certification, and compliance is often preferred.

Candidates with an equivalent combination of experience and/or education are encouraged to apply.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Advance database management skills (e.g., Access and Excel import/export file functions). General statistics and research techniques; evidence of attention to detail; effective listening, oral, and written communication skills; ability to conduct presentations to groups large and small; evidence of appropriate counseling skills; and experience in making independent professional judgment decisions are essential for this non-entry level position. Ability to review and interpret regulations and apply policies and procedures maintain compliance.
Additional Comments Regarding Position
High volume work environment. Occasional overnight travel, infrequent weekend & evening presentations, and overtime are required during peak processing times. Banner experience preferred.

1. Manages the Veteran’s Affairs Education Benefits Programs. Writes institutional policy and implements procedures that ensure compliance with statutory and regulatory laws and regulations. Oversees the enrollments and certification process for Veterans seeking assistance through multiple VA benefits programs. Manages requests for special needs for Veterans for equipment and other handicap related services. Ensures academic compliance with the S.C. Commission of Higher Education as new courses or programs of study are initiated.
