Position Description | The College of Charleston invites qualified applicants for a full-time, tenure-track Assistant Professor position to teach in the established Exercise Science Program. The successful candidate will join an active faculty in the Department of Health and Human Performance within the newly formed and expanding School of Health Sciences. The school also offers undergraduate degrees in Public Health and Health Services Administration and Management. We currently have 20 full-time teacher-scholars that serve approximately 750 undergraduate majors with ~400 majoring in exercise science. We are committed to preparing and equipping the next generation of health professionals and are seeking applicants who share our mission and want to engage with undergraduate students in and outside the classroom through dynamic teaching, professional advising, and research mentorship. Founded in 1770, the College of Charleston is nationally recognized as a strong public liberal arts and sciences university that is committed to diversity, equity and inclusion, and that ranks among the nation’s top institutions for quality education, student life, and affordability. The student body numbers approximately 11,000 students in undergraduate and graduate programs, delivering a small-college feel blended with the advantages and diversity of a mid-sized university. The College’s urban campus is embedded in the center of historic downtown Charleston, South Carolina, amongst a thriving community of world-class businesses, restaurants, and the local healthcare industry, while still only a 20-minute drive to three public beaches. You are invited to visit our websites to learn more about the College, School, and Department. The required responsibilities of this position include 1) providing high-quality instruction for 3 course sections per semester in courses that align with the current and future needs of the undergraduate exercise science major, 2) maintaining an independent research agenda at the level of expectation for a tenure-track faculty member, 3) offering academic advising and professional mentoring for undergraduate students, 4) working collaboratively to advance the program and department in meeting stated goals and objectives, 5) engaging in professional and college-wide service activities, and 6) committing to a liberal arts and sciences undergraduate education. Applicants must possess an earned PhD degree in exercise physiology or a closely related discipline from an accredited institution before the August 2025 start date. Applicants should show scholarly promise through authorship on professional presentations and peer-reviewed publications in relevant journals. Applicants must be able to demonstrate the ability to teach undergraduate-level students with the promise for teaching excellence. We are specifically seeking individuals who can teach in the areas of assessment and exercise prescription, exercise physiology, exercise nutrition, as well as special and clinical exercise populations with additional courses that match professional expertise. Preference will be given to those with a record of undergraduate teaching and mentoring students through the research process, and an ability to demonstrate active learning techniques in a higher education setting. Interested individuals should apply online at https://jobs.cofc.edu, and include a 1) curriculum vitae, 2) cover letter that describes your research agenda, 3) a teaching philosophy that describes your teaching experience and pedagogical strategies, highlighting courses capable of and interested in instructing, 4) unofficial graduate transcripts, and 5) contact information for three references. Questions regarding the position can be directed to Dr. Liza Reader at readerer@cofc.edu. Applications completed by January 10, 2025 will receive full consideration by the search committee. This is a nine-month position; the salary and benefits package are competitive and commensurate with experience and qualifications. |
