Description

Depending on the applicant and the level of experience, this position can be any of the above relative to responsibility for inspections and/or plan review of new and renovated structures and the enforcement of local, state, and federal regulations for commercial and residential construction. Particular emphasis will be placed on residential and commercial construction experience and multiple disciplines. The selected candidate may make plan review decisions and/ or construction-site inspections to ensure compliance. The ability to deal effectively with individuals involved in the construction field is a must.

If the best candidate only meets the minimum qualifications, that person would most likely be placed in the Codes Inspector level. Different levels of certifications and or experience may warrant a higher grade. Preference may be given to those with more than one certification or a combination of experience and education, experience as a plan reviewer or code inspector, PE (Professional Engineer), or AIA (Architect).


CODES INSPECTOR GRADE: PFLD/09 HIRING HOURLY RANGE: $24.52 - $32.11

SR CODES INSPECTOR GRADE: PFLD/10 HIRING HOURLY RANGE: $25.98 - $34.02

CHIEF CODES INSPECTOR GRADE: PROF/02 HIRING HOURLY RANGE: $29.25 - $38.31

Duties and Responsibilities

You must possess or obtain SCBCC certifications in residential and commercial plan review or inspections and pass the NIMS (National Incident Management System) 100 & 700 tests within the six-month probationary period and then obtain certification as a multi-discipline plan reviewer or inspector also within one year of employment. Must have the ability to effectively utilize personal computers and software such as Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and other job-related software. Must communicate effectively in oral and written form. Ability to manage and prioritize routine, specialized and complex assignments and problems utilizing knowledge acquired through education, training and experience. Must be able to adapt to a changing and continually improving environment.

Preferred Qualification: Five (5) years of experience as a supervisor in a building/construction trades field; and six (6) or more years’ experience as a licensed contractor, plans reviewer, codes inspector, or equivalent education and experience or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to perform the work; and

The following: National Incident Management System (NIMS) certification 100, 200, 300, 700 & 800.

  • Registered or have the ability to register with the South Carolina Building Codes Council, have one or the equivalent of the current SC Building Code Council (SCBCC) certifications under SC Building Codes Council;
  • All 4 International Codes Council (ICC) Residential Inspector Certifications (Building, Electrical, Mechanical and Plumbing);
  • All 4 International Codes Council (ICC) Commercial Inspector Certifications (Building, Electrical, Mechanical, and Plumbing);
  • 1 Plan Examiner Certification in assigned discipline – i.e., Building, Electrical, Mechanical, or Plumbing;
  • Residential Energy Inspector/Plans Examiner;
  • Building Codes and Standards Module;
  • ICC Legal Module;
  • ICC Management Module;
  • Coastal and Floodplain Construction Inspector Certification;
  • Commercial Energy Inspector;
  • Commercial Fire Sprinkler Inspector;
  • Commercial Fire Alarm Inspector;

ESSENTIAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Clarity of speech and hearing or other communication capabilities, with or without reasonable accommodation, to enable the employee to communicate effectively;

  • Personal mobility, strength, balance and physical reflexes, with or without reasonable accommodation, to enable the employee to perform duties on a variety of inspection sites under physically demanding and hazardous conditions in all types of weather, including work in rough terrain, construction sites, ladders, scaffolds, crawlspaces, heavy equipment and live exposed electrical equipment throughout the County.

Minimum Qualifications

Minimum Education – Position requires a high school diploma, (or GED)

Minimum Qualification - Five (5) or more years’ experience as a licensed contractor or possess one or more current SC Building Code Council (SCBCC) certifications under SC Building Codes Council as a plans reviewer, codes inspector, or equivalent education and experience. Must have a valid driver’s license or the ability to obtain a South Carolina driver’s license upon acceptance of the position. This position will be filled at a level dependent upon qualifications of the successful applicant.
