GIS TECHNICIAN
(will consider GIS Tech I or II)
OBJECTIVES
- Support and maintain Berkeley Electric's Geographical Information System (GIS) by ensuring that the electric model, the associated database, connectivity, and background data sets are accurate and current using current GIS software and technology both in office and field.
- Support both the digital and hard copy publishing of the GIS system including the electric model and associated land base. This includes being able to technically support the end users mapping client and the maintenance/operation of department publishing equipment.
- To secure, record, analyze and maintain engineering data, perform drafting functions, and power system modeling as assigned.
- Supports GIS Manager and/or Analyst in Database design and application creation using GIS tool sets. Assists in testing and development of GIS systems and applications.
POSITION SPECIFICATIONS
EDUCATION:
An Associates Degree related to GIS, Geography, Earth Science, Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field is required. Prior experience, course work, or related formal training in GIS, AutoCAD and the fundamentals of electric design is required. Prior experience as a GIS Technician I, Distribution Designer, or related field may be considered in lieu of required associate degree and additional formal training.
EXPERIENCE:
Three (3) years' experience mapping electrical distribution lines and the use of ArcMap, Arc Pro and/or AutoCAD to produce the related system maps and applications is required. Requires three (3) years' experience in this position to become proficient.
JOB KNOWLEDGE:
Must be familiar with RUS specifications for overhead and underground construction, the National Electrical Safety Code, OSHA regulations, and local and state codes. Must have an effective working knowledge of the Cooperative system and service area. Must have knowledge of several types of electrical distribution equipment. Must have a thorough knowledge of Cooperative policies, practices, and programs.
ABILITIES & SKILLS:
Must have the ability to follow the system electrically to determine the direction of feed, cut points and phasing on the electrical distribution system. Must be able to read and follow maps. Must have and keep a valid South Carolina Driver's License. Must be skilled at using computers and software, specifically, GIS related software for mapping. Two (2) years' experience with GIS data collection and field equipment necessary. Also must be skilled in working and communicating with employees, members, and the public.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Job will consist of inside and outside work in maintaining the GIS system. Some overtime will be required. Subject to irregular hours during emergencies. May require travel outside of the service area for training.
