Job Summary and Essential Functions

This position typically provides general building maintenance around the facility and protecting the natural habitats at Cypress Gardens; coordinates maintenance and repairs; supervises maintenance staff; and deals courteously and effectively with fellow employees and citizens. These duties are performed near large areas of water that are inhabited by reptiles or other wildlife in controlled and/or natural environments.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Maintains maintenance and boat dock personnel schedules, coordinates all maintenance needs and performs general building maintenance and repairs including carpentry, plumbing, HVAC, minor electrical and custodial work.
  • Supervises other maintenance staff members who perform such duties.
  • Oversees exhibition construction and audio/visual set up.
  • Supervises the preparation/set up of special events, including design building.
  • Assists as security for special events.
  • Assists other staff with obtaining and unloading supplies required for repair and/or small construction projects.
  • Gives boat tours and assists visitors with boats.
  • Assists director with personnel issues related to the maintenance staff.
  • Schedules and works with volunteers.
  • Uses computers to update supply inventory listing, create/complete performance evaluations of subordinate staff members, maintain maintenance schedules of equipment and facilities, and other related tasks.
  • Acts as team safety/risk coordinator for the facility.
  • Troubleshoots pumps and equipment and maintains all maintenance records.
  • Works closely with other departments on maintenance and repairs of all buildings and equipment.
  • Makes recommendations on needed repairs or replacements.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Requirements to Perform Work

  • High School diploma or equivalent;
  • Six (6) years of related experience with three (3) plus years of carpentry experience;
  • Must have and maintain a valid driver's license for South Carolina with safe driving record;
Special Requirements:
  • Departmental testing may be administered during interview;
  • A criminal background check will be completed on selected applicant if a current one (less than 3 years old) is not on file.
  • This is a safety sensitive position and is subject to random drug and alcohol testing.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Knowledge of grounds maintenance equipment and construction tools required.
  • Knowledge of small engine repair and maintenance desired.
  • Skill in computer utilization required.
  • Ability to read and write.
  • Ability to manage inventory and property.
  • Ability to make budget recommendations.
  • Ability to use, repair and supervise use of small, medium and heavy equipment and machinery.
  • Ability to establish policies.

Physical Demands

This position requires the employee to reach, pull and push with hands and arms; stand; walk; use hands to handle, feel, grasp or operate objects, tools or controls; sit; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl; use mental acuity and repetitive motion; and talk and hear. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to ninety-five (95) pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.

Work Conditions

The work is regularly performed in a safe and secure work environment that may periodically have unpredicted requirements or demands. Thirty-seven and one half (37.5) hours per week. Normal work hours are 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday with the ability to work after hours when necessary. Weekend and holiday work is required. Scheduled hours/days, job location, duties and any other information contained herein is subject to change. May be required to work extra hours and to perform extra or different duties during emergency situations.
