Job Summary and Essential Functions

This position typically provides moderate level skilled tasks and deals courteously and effectively with fellow employees and citizens.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Receives, responds, investigates and implements plans for resolving public and law enforcement requests relating to the violation(s) of the County animal control code ordinances.
  • Captures, controls and ensures proper treatment is given to unwanted or escaped animals in accordance with adopted department procedures, policies and County regulations.
  • Sets traps and tranquilizes animals as needed for capture and treatment.
  • Investigates complaints of and performs wellness checks on abused, neglected and other alleged violations involving the mistreatment of animals.
  • Issues citations and presents cases in court which involve presenting evidence, calling and questioning witnesses and testifying in relation to violations involving the animal control code ordinances.
  • Distributes information, provides training and educates the general public on County regulations and the acceptable standards of animal care/containment processes as prescribed by prevailing best management practices, local ordinances, laws and policies.
  • Handles and transports captured animals in compliance with the Berkeley County Animal Control Ordinance and department procedures.
  • Maintains knowledge and current certifications related to compliance with appropriate procedures and regulations for animal capture, animal containment and animal care violations.
  • Maintains and safely operates equipment used in the performance of duties related to the position.
  • Oversees cleaning and maintaining inventory in dog clinic, cat clinic, laboratory and euthanasia room.
  • Assist with daily functions of cleaning the shelter.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Requirements to Perform Work

  • High School diploma or equivalent;
  • Minimum of six (6) months related experience preferred;
  • Must have and maintain a valid driver's license for South Carolina with a safe driving record;

Special Requirements:

  • National Animal Control Association (NACA) certification is preferred. Will be required to obtain a NACA certification during employment;
  • Serves "on-call" status on a rotating basis for after hours, weekends and holidays as scheduled;
  • Must be comfortable working with all animals;
  • Departmental testing may be administered during interview;
  • A criminal background check will be completed on selected applicant if a current one (less than 3 years old) is not on file.
  • This is a safety sensitive position and is subject to random drug and alcohol testing.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of the Berkeley County area preferred.
  • Skill in being self-guided individual requiring minimal supervision.
  • Ability to display comfort in working with all animals.
  • Ability to be flexible with schedule changes and short notice overtime requests.
  • Ability to be part of an entrepreneurial team that is goal-oriented, collegial and innovative.

Physical Demands

This position requires the employee to reach, pull and push with hands and arms; stand; use hands to handle, feel, finger, grasp or operate objects, tools or controls; sit; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl; use mental acuity and repetitive motion; and walk, talk and hear. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to ninety (90) pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.

Work Conditions

The work is regularly performed in a dynamic environment that requires sensitivity to change and responsiveness to changing goals, priorities, and needs. This position operates on a rotating 12-hour work schedule on an assigned shift. Scheduled hours/days, job location, duties and any other information contained herein is subject to change. May be required to work extra hours and to perform extra or different duties during emergency situations.
