Job Summary and Essential Functions

This position typically provides the maintenance of all County vehicles and equipment; repairs and diagnoses mechanical and electrical repairs; and deals courteously and effectively with fellow employees and citizens.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Assists the Superintendent with day to day operations of the maintenance shop, including scheduling equipment repair, ordering parts, completing purchase orders and entering work orders for technicians.
  • Coordinates daily work schedules for all technicians.
  • Leads, oversees and participates in the more complex tasks of technicians.
  • Performs preventative maintenance and repairs on heavy construction equipment and vehicles such as bulldozers, track hoes, motor graders, backhoes, end loaders, dump trucks, tractor/trailers and various agriculture equipment.
  • Diagnoses and repairs diesel engines, electrical and hydraulic systems using state of the art testing equipment.
  • Removes, repairs and replaces major components as necessary.
  • Performs routine preventative maintenance and maintains accurate records of tasks performed.
  • Assists with maintaining material and tool inventory.
  • Performs roadside maintenance and service on all vehicles.
  • Ensures adherence to safe working practices and procedures.
  • Provides training, guidance and assistance to lower level technicians.
  • Works on generator engines throughout the County.
  • Repairs brake systems.
  • Performs data entry of work orders.
  • Inspects physical conditions of warehouses, fleet vehicles and equipment.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Requirements to Perform Work

Mechanic:

  • High School diploma or equivalent;
  • Two (2) years of related automotive experience;
  • ASE Certifications or OEM Certifications preferred;
  • Must have and maintain a valid driver’s license for South Carolina with safe driving record; Commercial Driver’s License preferred;

Senior Mechanic:
  • High School diploma or equivalent;
  • Five (5) years of related automotive experience;
  • Must have and maintain a valid Commercial Driver's License Class A for South Carolina required with preferred HAZMAT endorsement and a safe driving record;

Special Requirements:

  • Basic ASE Certifications preferred;
  • Departmental testing may be administered during interview;
  • A criminal background check will be completed on selected applicant if a current one (less than 3 years old) is not on file.
  • This is a safety sensitive position and is subject to random drug and alcohol testing.
  • Serves “on-call” status on a rotating basis for after hours, weekends and holidays as scheduled;

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of working in dealerships.
  • Knowledge of common maintenance shop safety practices.
  • Ability to operate electronic and diagnostic software and equipment from various manufacturers highly preferred.
  • Ability to read and write.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to manage inventory and property.
  • Ability to make budget recommendations.
  • Ability to use small office equipment and computers.
  • Ability to use or repair small, medium and heavy equipment and machinery.

Physical Demands

This position requires the employee to reach, pull and push with hands and arms; stand; use hands to handle, feel, finger, grasp or operate objects, tools or controls; sit; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl; use mental acuity and repetitive motion; and walk, talk and hear. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to ninety-five (95) pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.

Work Conditions

The work is regularly performed in an environment with heavy equipment and machinery that could result in bodily harm to co-workers or others. Normal working hours are Monday through Friday from 7:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. with the ability to work flexible hours when necessary. Scheduled hours/days, job location, duties and any other information contained herein is subject to change. May be required to work extra hours and to perform extra or different duties during emergency situations.
