Job Summary and Essential Functions
- EMPLOYMENT WILL BEGIN IN OCTOBER
This position typically provides the assistance to solicitors in preparing for and prosecuting criminal cases; and deals courteously and effectively with fellow employees and citizens.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:- Assists solicitors in prosecuting criminal cases.
- Locates and interviews victims and witnesses.
- Composes complete and accurate reports for investigative purposes.
- Obtains police reports, background checks, mug shots, fingerprints and bookings from other agencies.
- Reviews criminal histories and background to determine security issues of witnesses and victims.
- Transports victims and witnesses.
- Stores evidence in a manner that preserves the chain of custody.
- Reviews and studies evidence with solicitor.
- Prepares exhibits and provides technical assistance in court.
- Serves subpoenas to witnesses.
- Collects evidence for trial cases.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Requirements to Perform Work

- Minimum Education level of a Bachelors degree; and at least 5 years of investigative experience or:
- An Associate’s degree and 8 years of investigative experience or:
- Any equivalent combination of experience and training which provided the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform the work; and
- Must be a certified South Carolina Class 1 Law Enforcement Officer (LE1), or SCCJA approved and cleared equivalent out of State certification.
- Must have and maintain a valid driver’s license for South Carolina with safe driving record.
- Departmental testing may be administered during interview.
- Must pass certification test for NCIC Inquiry operator.
- Must attend annual firearm qualifications training for Berkeley County.
- A criminal background check will be completed on selected applicant if a current one (less than 3 years old) is not on file.
- This is a safety sensitive position and is subject to random drug and alcohol testing.
- Knowledge of personal computers, including Microsoft Word.
- Substantial knowledge of general administrative and/or management policies and procedures.
- Knowledge in leading others within the County guidelines.
- Comprehensive knowledge of personnel management and effective supervisory practices.
- Ability to render accurate oral or written reports of incidents and violations of the law.
- Ability to restrain prisoners and run in order to apprehend a person.
- Skilled in communicating effectively with others, both orally and in writing, using technical and nontechnical language to respond to inquiries from employees and/or the public.
- Skilled in the use of general office equipment.
- Able to provide effective leadership, motivation, and supervision to subordinate and related support personnel.
- Ability to act quickly and efficiently in an emergency situation.
Physical Demands

This position requires the employee to sit, walk, stand, climb, crawl and crouch; use hands and fingers to handle, feel, finger and grasp objects such as weapons, handcuffs, etc.; reach, pull and push with hands and arms; kneel and bend at the waist; use mental acuity and repetitive motion; and walk, talk and hear. The employee must lift and carry up to seventy-five (75) pounds and move one hundred fifty (150) pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.
Work Conditions

The work is regularly performed in a relatively safe, secure and stable work environment. Thirty-seven and one half (37.5) hours per week. Normal operating hours are Monday through Friday 9:00am until 5:00pm with the ability to work flexible hours when necessary. Scheduled hours/days, job location, duties and any other information contained herein is subject to change. May be required to work extra hours and to perform extra or different duties during emergency situations.
