Job Summary and Essential Functions

This position typically provides enforcement of codes related to high grass and weeds, trash and debris and abandoned vehicles; and deals courteously and effectively with fellow employees and citizens.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:- Receives, responds, investigates and implements plans for resolution of requests relating to the violations of zoning and building ordinances.
- Investigates and inspects alleged violations of zoning and building code ordinance and other related County code violations.
- Issues citations for code violations.
- Presents cases in court in relation to Berkeley County ordinance and building policies.
- Distributes information, provides training and educates the general public on County regulations and acceptable practices of property maintenance, building construction, permitting and local ordinances laws and policies.
- Maintains knowledge of current certification related to compliance with appropriate procedures and regulations as relative to building construction, zoning, permitting and County policies and procedures.
- Maintains and safely operates equipment and PPE used in the performance of duties.
- Writes up calls for code related complaints.
- Interacts with upset tenants and property owners.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Requirements to Perform Work

- High School diploma or equivalent;
- Six (6) months related experience;
- Must have and maintain a valid driver's license for South Carolina with safe driving record.
- International Code Council certification for property maintenance and housing inspection must be obtained within six (6) months of employment; Employee will be separated from employment if required certifications are not obtained within period of time stated and maintained throughout employment;
- Departmental testing may be administered during interview;
- A criminal background check will be completed on selected applicant if a current one (less than 3 years old) is not on file.
- Knowledge of the Berkeley County area preferred.
- Ability to use small office equipment and computers.
- Ability to use or repair medium equipment and machinery.
Physical Demands

This position requires the employee to reach with hands and arms; stand; walk; and use hands to handle, feel, finger, grasp or operate objects, tools or controls; sit; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl; use mental acuity and repetitive motion; and talk and hear. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to sixty-five (65) pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.
Work Conditions

The work is regularly performed in a dynamic environment that requires sensitivity to change and responsiveness to changing goals, priorities and needs. Thirty-seven and one half (37.5) hours per week. The normal work schedule is Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. with the ability to work after hours when necessary. Scheduled hours/days, job location, duties and any other information contained herein is subject to change. May be required to work extra hours and to perform extra or different duties during emergency situations.
