Job Summary and Essential Functions

This position typically provides highly skilled tasks, provides strategic direction and day to day management of the intake process, procedures and protocols. Serves as the lead staff member in planning and implementing humane shelter intake management programs and associated animal care services adhering to established policies and procedures, and federal, state and local laws/regulations in accordance with The Association of Shelter Veterinarians’ Guidelines for Standards of Care in Animal Shelters.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Manages the day to day operations of the Animal Shelter Intake which includes the daily supervision of staff and preparation of an annual budget.
  • Adheres to the highest ethical standards and provision of animal care in a safe, competent, professional and humane manner at all times.
  • Supervises animal flow to maximize quantity and quality of services provided.
  • Schedules and assigns kennel techs and animal care techs on rotating schedules.
  • Receives, responds, investigates and implements plans for resolving public and law enforcement requests relating to the violation(s) of the County’s animal control.
  • Works with the medical team to ensure medical needs are identified, animals are receiving timely medical and surgical care and that treatments are being performed.
  • Directs the overall quality assurance programs, including regular review and follow-up on internal quality assurance alerts.
  • Responds to specific problems and requests.
  • Serves as the principal liaison in working with animal control agencies, state and national animal organizations, as appropriate.
  • Directs and monitors all aspects of the constant humane treatment and handling of sheltered animals.
  • Part of a team that performs and makes euthanasia decisions.
  • Works closely with the Animal Services Manager to ensure efficient operations of the shelter.
  • Monitors the maintenance, cleanliness and sanitation of equipment, animal care areas.
  • Creates SOPs and monitor all aspects of shelter care, including cleanliness, feeding and housing.
  • Maintains knowledge and current certifications for the proper procedures related to compliance with appropriate procedures and regulations for animal capture, animal containment and animal care violations.
  • Ensures accurate recordkeeping and maintains quality control.
  • Monitors programs, policies, SOPs, training and activities to ensure compliance with OSHA regulations.
  • Monitors safety compliance of staff and takes immediate action to correct hazards.
  • Attends safety meetings and training.
  • Works with the volunteer/foster coordinator on coordinating transports by helping obtain health certificates, and temporary foster homes.
  • Builds relationships with other shelters to maximize transport opportunities for unclaimed animals
  • Adheres to OSHA compliance policies and procedures.
  • Establishes and coordinates staff training and education programs.
  • Provides guidance, consultation and training, as appropriate to all staff.
  • Reviews employee activity sheets and productivity reports for appropriateness of action.
  • Maintains and safely operates equipment used in the performance of duties related to the position.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Requirements to Perform Work

  • Associate of Science or Associate of Applied Science in Veterinary Technology;
  • Four (4) years of related experience including supervisory experience required;
  • Or equivalent combination of education and experience;
Special Requirements:
  • Must have or be able to obtain a euthanasia certification within six (6) months of employment;
  • Must have and maintain a valid driver’s license for South Carolina with a safe driving record;
  • Departmental testing may be administered during interview;
  • A criminal background check will be completed on selected applicant if a current one (less than 3 years old) is not on file.

Physical Demands

This position requires the employee to reach, pull and push with hands and arms; stand; walk; use hands to handle, feel, finger, grasp or operate objects, tools, or controls; sit; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; talk and hear. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to ninety (90) pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.

Work Conditions

The work is regularly performed in a relatively safe, secure and stable work environment. Thirty-seven and one half (37.5) hours per week. Employees who work at the Animal Shelter are required to work a rotating work schedule. Must be flexible to work anytime during normal working hours Monday through Friday from 8:00am until 6:00pm; Saturday and Sunday from 9:00am to 5:00pm. Scheduled hours/days, job location, duties and any other information contained herein is subject to change. May be required to work extra hours and to perform extra or different duties during emergency situations.
