Job Summary and Essential Functions

SALARY DEPENDS ON QUALIFICATIONS
This position typically provides performance of moderate level skilled craft duties in the operation of multiple forms of heavy equipment. Must be able to deal courteously and effectively with fellow employees.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
  • Service convenience centers, recycling sites, tire hauling, and rock and dirt hauling. Operate heavy vehicles for service throughout various County work sites.
  • Load and unload vehicle as required assuring all safety rules and regulations are being followed during the process.
  • Maintain and perform minor service requirements on specific vehicle assigned such as checking and maintaining fluid and lubricant levels, lighting, tires and applicable safety equipment.
  • Occasionally operates small hand tools, forklifts, chain saws, commercial weed eaters and earth compactors.
  • Manages site safety.
  • Maintains logs and records of maintenance.
  • Provides emergency response in the event of a natural disaster.
  • Transports heavy equipment and materials to job sites.
  • Provides traffic control as needed.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Requirements to Perform Work

VEHICLE OPERATOR 1:

  • High School diploma or equivalent;
  • Must have and maintain a valid Class B CDL for South Carolina with a safe driving record. Previous vehicle operating experience.
VEHICLE OPERATOR 2:
  • High School diploma or equivalent;
  • Must have and maintain a valid Class A CDL for South Carolina with a safe driving record. Minimum of one (1) year vehicle operating, or comparable experience.
  • Demonstrate the ability to operate a roll-off.
VEHICLE OPERATOR 3:
  • High School diploma or equivalent;
  • Must have and maintain a valid Class A CDL for South Carolina with a safe driving record.
  • Minimum of two (2) years vehicle operating, or comparable experience. Demonstrate the ability to operate a roll-off and tractor trailer trucks.
VEHICLE OPERATOR 4:
  • High School diploma or equivalent;
  • Must have and maintain a valid Class A CDL for South Carolina with a safe driving record and Tanker Endorsement.
  • Minimum of three (3) years vehicle operating, or comparable experience.
  • Demonstrate the ability to read and utilize road maps.
Special Requirements:
  • Departmental testing may be administered during interview;
  • A criminal background check will be completed on selected applicant if a current one (less than 3 years old) is not on file.
  • This is a safety sensitive position and is subject to random drug and alcohol testing.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Ability to read and write.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions and organize, plan and execute these instructions.
  • Ability to use small office equipment.
  • Ability to use or repair small, medium and heavy equipment and machinery.

Physical Demands

This position requires the employee to reach, pull and push with hands and arms; stand; use hands to handle, feel, finger, grasp or operate objects, tools or controls; sit; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl; use mental acuity and repetitive motion; and walk, talk and hear. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to ninety-five (95) pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.

Work Conditions

The work is regularly performed in an environment with heavy equipment and machinery that could result in bodily harm to co-workers or others. Employees assigned to work at the Landfill are required to work forty (40) hours per week, on a rotating work schedule to include weekends and holidays. Landfill hours are 7:30 A.M. – 4:30 P.M. Monday – Friday and Saturday 7:30 A.M. – 1:00 P.M. Scheduled hours/days, job location, duties and any other information contained herein is subject to change. May be required to work extra hours, weekends and to perform extra or different duties during emergency situations.
