This position typically provides assistance in the operation of the water and/or wastewater facilities.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:- Sets up, adjusts, calibrates, cleans, maintains and troubleshoots laboratory and field equipment.
- Collects samples and maintains proper documentation as required by DHEC.
- Performs visual and auditory inspections of plant equipment and maintains appropriate logs.
- Performs routine maintenance and cleaning tasks with a variety of hand tools for equipment, buildings and grounds.
- Records flow, rainfall and other data, changing charts as required by DHEC.
- Monitor equipment and facilities utilizing computer terminal.
- Performs routine grounds keeping, utilizing mowers and weed trimmers.
- Receives, monitors and mixes chemicals.
- Operates sludge de-watering equipment.
- May monitor plant operations and pump stations.
- May inspect facilities and equipment for signs of disrepair and performs necessary maintenance work.
- May receive customer complaints over the phone and coordinate services and repairs with various crews.
- Participates in shift turnover meetings.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Minimum Requirements to Perform Work

- High School diploma or equivalent;
- Must have and maintain a valid driver’s license for South Carolina with safe driving record.
- Six (6) months of related experience in general maintenance;
- Must be able to obtain a valid Class “D” Biological Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator Certification within one year, and are required to maintain current certification as a condition of continued employment; and must progress annually in obtaining higher levels of certification.
- One (1) year of related experience in general maintenance;
- Must have a valid Class D Biological Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator Certification, and are required to maintain current certification as a condition of continued employment;
- Two (2) years of related experience in general maintenance;
- Must have a valid Class C Biological Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator Certification, and are required to maintain current certification as a condition of continued employment;
- Three (3) years of related experience in general maintenance;
- Must have a valid Class B Biological Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator Certification, and are required to maintain current certification as a condition of continued employment;
- Four (4) years of related experience in general maintenance;
- Must have a valid Class A Biological Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator Certification, and are required to maintain current certification as a condition of continued employment;
- Departmental testing may be administered during interview;
- A criminal background check will be completed on selected applicant if a current one (less than 3 years old) is not on file.
- This is a safety sensitive position and is subject to random drug and alcohol testing.
- Knowledge of PCs as needed to interpret alarm systems.
- Knowledge of mathematical calculation methods and mapping systems.
- Ability to follow written and oral instruction with minimum supervision.
- Ability to write legible and descriptive reports on duties performed.
- Ability to use and maintain equipment and machinery.
- Physical Demands
This position requires the employee to reach with hands and arms; stand; use hands to handle, feel or operate objects, tools or controls; sit; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl; use mental acuity; and walk, talk and hear. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to sixty (60) pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.
- Work Conditions
The work is regularly performed in a dynamic environment that requires sensitivity to change and responsiveness to changing goals, priorities and needs. This position operates on a rotating 12-hour shift schedule. Shifts run 7:00 – 7:00 respectively on a 36/48-hour work rotation. Scheduled hours/days, job location, duties and any other information contained herein is subject to change. May be required to work extra hours and to perform extra or different duties during emergency situations.
