Job Summary and Essential Functions

This position typically provides supervision of mechanical repair, facilities maintenance and landscaping forces; oversees planning, material procurement, budget requests and satisfactory completion and proper documentation of all projects assigned; issues technical training of assigned personnel.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Performs inspections of facilities to evaluate effectiveness of ongoing maintenance efforts, material durability, facility conditions, landscaping and overall appearance.
  • Determines necessary corrections to maintenance procedures.
  • Selects vendors and contractors in accordance with Purchasing Guidelines and coordinates efforts to complete projects.
  • Maintains departmental records within the system.
  • Ensures administrative requirements, such as work orders, time cards, performance evaluations and disciplinary actions are accurately completed in a timely manner.
  • Performs evaluation and correction of mechanical submittal drawings, specifications and proposals for new equipment and projects.
  • Assists other departments as required.
  • Acts as a technical expert for personnel in the installation, operation, preventative maintenance and repair of centrifugal pumps, valves, gear reducers, blowers, aerators grit collection bearing replacement, mechanical alignments and various mechanical equipment associated with wastewater collection and treatment.
  • Manages training and safety for personnel in the performance duties with crane trucks, overhead cranes for pump removal and installation, generators during power failures, vactor truck and day to day maintenance.
  • Prepares budgets for approval, including those for funding and implementation of programs.
  • Meets with department heads, managers, supervisors, vendors and others to solicit cooperation and resolve problems.
  • Plans, organizes and manages the work of subordinate staff to ensure that the work is accomplished in a manner consistent with organizational requirements.
  • Coordinates and directs the financial planning, budgeting, procurement or investment activities of all or part of an organization.
  • Coordinates and recommends procedures for facility and equipment maintenance or modification, including the replacement of machines.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Requirements to Perform Work
  • High School diploma or equivalent; Associates degree in maintenance preferred;
  • Ten (10) years of experience in mechanical maintenance preferably in the field of wastewater collection and treatment;
  • Or equivalent education, and/or experience.
  • Must have and maintain a valid driver’s license in South Carolina with a safe driving record;

Special Requirements:
  • Must have or be able to obtain and maintain a Class A Wastewater Collection System Operator certification within 2 years of employment;
  • Departmental testing may be administered during interview;
  • A criminal background check will be completed on selected applicant if a current one (less than 3 years old) is not on file.
  • This is a safety sensitive position and is subject to random drug and alcohol testing.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Knowledge of the type of mechanical equipment associated with the wastewater industry and appropriate maintenance procedures.
  • Knowledge of and the ability to use, interpret and apply information from mechanical testing and calibration equipment such as, but not limited to, pressure/vacuum gauges, micrometers, dial indicators, feeler gauges and torque wrenches.
  • Ability to motivate, evaluate and lead people.
  • Ability to express himself (herself) clearly and accurately both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to read and comprehend mechanical schematics, assembly drawings, technical data and blueprints.
  • Ability to enter and exit man holes, pump station wet wells and other confined spaces to perform inspections and supervise maintenance work.
  • Ability to prepare purchase orders and manage inventory and property.
  • Ability to manage the budget and make budget recommendations.
  • Ability to use small office equipment and computers.
  • Ability to use or repair small, medium and heavy equipment and machinery.
  • Ability to supervise employees and create and guide plans.
Physical Demands

This position requires the employee to reach, pull and push with hands and arms; stand; use hands to handle, feel, finger or operate objects, tools or controls; sit; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl; use mental acuity and repetitive motion; and walk, talk and hear. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to sixty (60) pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.

Work Conditions

The work is regularly performed in a dynamic environment that requires sensitivity to change and responsiveness to changing goals, priorities and needs. Thirty-seven and one half (37.5) hours per week. Normal working hours are between Monday through Thursday from 7:00am until 5:00pm with the ability to work after hours when necessary. Scheduled hours/days, job location, duties and any other information contained herein is subject to change. May be required to work extra hours and to perform extra or different duties during emergency situations.
