Job Summary and Essential Functions

This position typically implements the mosquito abatement program by operating the spray truck during evening hours; and deals courteously and effectively with fellow employees and citizens.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:  

  • Implements the mosquito abatement program by performing mosquito breeding site inspections, larva collections, larvicide applications, adult surveillance through light trap collections and landing rate counts, and early morning adulticide applications when necessary.
  • Serves as team lead for part-time spray truck operators.  
  • Services spray trucks with insecticide and fuel. 
  • Operates mosquito control spray truck 8 - 9 hours per evening as needed. 
  • Works with a variety of pesticides. 
  • Prepares and maintains routine records of operations. 
  • Loads and unloads equipment/supplies as required. 
  • Assists in the calibration, maintenance and repair of spray equipment. 
  • Responds to citizens’ requests for service. 
  • Educates citizens on reducing future mosquito breeding.
  • Identifies mosquito breeding sites throughout County.
  • Maintains inventory of pesticides, adulticides and larvicides.
  • Records mosquito landing rate counts throughout the County, both at the locations of service requests and designated locations during light trap collection runs.
  • Sorts mosquitoes from other bugs collected in light traps hung throughout the County, separates the males from the females and records the findings.
  • Maintains cleanliness of the vehicles, lab and chemical storage areas.
  • Attends meetings as needed.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Requirements to Perform Work
  • High School diploma or equivalent;
  • One (1) year of related experience;
  • Must have and maintain a valid driver’s license for South Carolina with safe driving record;

Special Requirements: 

  • Departmental testing may be administered during interview;  
  • A criminal background check will be completed on selected applicant if a current one (less than 3 years old) is not on file.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: 

  • Ability to read and follow county maps.
  • Ability to read and write. 
  • Ability to create written documentation of collections.
  • Ability to use office equipment and computers.
  • Ability to use or repair small and medium equipment and machinery.
Physical Demands

This position requires the employee to reach, pull and push with hands and arms; stand; use hands to handle, feel, finger, grasp or operate objects, tools or controls; sit; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl; use mental acuity and repetitive motion; and walk, talk and hear. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to ninety-five (95) pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.

Work Conditions

The work is regularly performed in a dynamic environment that requires sensitivity to change and responsiveness to changing goals, priorities and needs. Thirty-seven and one half (37.5) hours per week. Normal working hours are Monday through Thursday from 10:00pm to 6:00am with the ability to work after hours when necessary. During “off season”, can rotate to day shift. Scheduled hours/days, job location, duties and any other information contained herein is subject to change. May be required to work extra hours and to perform extra or different duties during emergency situations.
